Just bought 2X256 OCZ EL DDR PC-3700 Dual Channel Gold Revision 2

now i hear they are 1 sided chips.. how much of a drop in overall proformance will i see because of the 1 sided vs double side chip?

i got a good deal saved like $50 so i bought em hopefully they will run ok with my P4 2.8c

anyone have any idea what the overall proformance hit you get on 865pe mobo with:

2X256 SS RAM VS 2X256 DS RAM

???

apreciate the help

ive heard the rev 2's oc like a bat outta hell if u gotta good set

Not so sure. Now they are being rated maybe 245, 1:1, 3-3-3- at 2.7 volts. Heck, decent PC4000 stuff like the ADATA will run 2.5-4-4-7 easily up to maybe 270, 1:1, and at low VDIMM too. Vitesta PC4000 will run 2.5-4-3-6 at up to 275, 1:1.

First of all, 256 MB sticks are ALL single-sided, with the exception of the OCZ PC3700 Golds Rev. 1.0. So to get DS sticks you are going to have to buy 512 MB sticks. They are denser so may not overclock as high as 256 MB sticks, however the difference in bandwidth is substantial. So much so I would beg, borrow, or steal to get the additional money for DS sticks.

The difference between SS and DS PC4000 sticks are something like 300 unbuffered Sandra points, or the diff between 2950 and 3250.

Morever, put DS sticks on a good 875P board and you won't be disappointed with the unbuffered bandwidth. Last couple of nights I've been running a DFI LanPary 875B board with DS ADATA PC450. At just 255, 1:1 or DDR510 I get 3600+ unbuffered scores. At 272, 1:1, 3-4-4-7 I got a 3700+ unbuffered score last night! PCMark2002 scores break 12k. Shoot, here in Japan you can get Vitesta PC4000 for maybe $99 U.S. per 512 MB stick.

Single-sided sticks OC better as there's a fewer number of overall chips, and thus not as much risk of one being a poor OC'er and getting in the way of the others' potential. You won't have any "performance drop" from having a stick be double or single-sided.

875P + DS sticks = mucho bandwidth. Been testing a 3.2C so I was running 236, 1:1 last night at 2.5-4-3-6 with my ADATA PC450. Got 3276/3210 unbuffered. That's only DDR472! Too bad wasn't 3D stable. This DFI board can't handle anything faster than 3-4-4-7 it seems, even with the ram way underclocked.

If you are fortunate enough to run 300, 1:1 with the PC4000 stuff, you may only see 3550 or so unbuffered with SS sticks. Compare that to 3700+ unbuffered at 272, 1:1 with DS sticks! (on a good board) You need all the bandwidth you can get with the relaxed timings.
