View Full Version : UT 2004 Slow?
I was wondering if anyone here had probs with long bootups? The demo ran perfectly.. loaded up real quick, yet the full version takes forever... I enter multiplayer games after my team mates have captured a flag already.... what gives? Im running at full settings (and I tried at default settings) and it just takes so long to load up a level... also it seems that this game runs off my ram cause it takes a while for windows to recover after I exit the game. Any ideas?
In UT2004:
Click settings, The game tab, and un-select Preload all player skins.
That option eats up about 300mb of ram

on the point of if taking a while after it loads to unload itself...I found that putting the XP tweak "AlwaysUnloadDll" made this stop

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\AlwaysUnloadDLL
^^ add that as a subkey and set its default to 1- this will ensure windows unloads all Dll files once it is done with them.

I got that option on, no probs here :p
Epic/Atari/DE (Whoever coded the game) Sure made a mistake by having that option selected by default.

I went into regedit and got as far as the \current version part and then there was no Explorer there to get into? What did I do wrong? I am not real familiar with the registry so any help will be appreciated. The reason that I was interested in doing that hack is that a lot of games dont always let loose of the memory right away once the game is done, so that hack would really help I would imagine. :)

that key is specific to XP, dunno about other windows OSs...if you search the AlwaysUnloadDLL with your OS on google im sure you will get some guides on where to find it.
when I added that key into the reg and restarted my computer, my wireless optical mouse wouldnt work... (while my wireless keyboard did)... I restarted a few times and still wouldnt work. I deleted the key and everything works fine... Any idea why it conflicts? Any way around it?

Ya that preload all skins was a mistake. Makes it load forever even on systems with 512 ram.

Only if you have a software modem :p Cause it takes cpu power away from the modem to process the skin.

I'm getting the same with a 9800Pro and 3ghz machine. I may turn down AA and AF a bit. Things move so fast in this game I doubt I'll be able to tell the difference.

Ti4200 here, 512MB DDR PC3200, Barton 2500+. I usually get around 60 or so fps on DM maps, down to 30 on ONS. I can play until it gets to 8, then I have to open the chat console and bitch.
Thanks for the tip about player models, my girlfriend loved to complain about length of time loading and would always say to me... "What's wrong with my computer" LOL
With that preloaded skins on my computer still loads fast as lightning. I know my computer is a beast buy still it all that uses is lots of ram so If you have 1gb of ram u should be able to do without any problems.
BTW this game kicks ass.
