From HERE (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/)

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

The next question most ppl ask is why do we fold.

A lot of ppl here start folding because of a lost or Ill loved one. And others start folding as a benchmark to insure a stable machine. Still other fold for the compitition generated by the points system stanford has implimented.

What ever the reason the possibility of finding cures for these deseases is in itself a annormous achievment. I for one am proud to be a part of this project and plan to fold until cures are found or the project ends. Hopefully the former. There are several DC projects in operation (seti for one) and Folding at Home by far IMO has the best potential to do mankind some good.

As far as team 32 goes, the ppl here are great. You'll find the majority don't mind answering a question that has been asked repeatedly and they actually enjoy helping new team members.

Hopefully this thread answers your questions and you decide to fold for team 32. We will be more then happy to have you as a teammate.

My first project should be done at 3PM EST. 16 hours total. Do you guys normally run 24/7?

Yup , 24/7 is the only way to go :attn:

Make sure you are using the flags -forcesse and -advmethods
