Would an HUD switch for example allow me to connect my Computer to my cable modem and my xbox live to my modem and both to be online all the time, or would i ahve to choose which one i would want connected? Thanks in advance.

It's called a hub not a HUD and it wouldn't work. You need a router if you want both to be able to connect at the same time. BTW, next time post networking questions in the Internet, Networking and Security (http://www.ocforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=16) section.

Not true. I had my xbox, my computer, and my room mates computer working through a hub. I had the modem, xbox, and my computer in one hub. He connected into another that connected into mine. We would have just used one hub but we didnt have an ethernet cable that reach far enough.

You were lucky then, most ISPs will only assign one IP address to an account at a time (be it static or via DHCP). If it will assign multiple IP addresses, then yes, you can just connect both via a hub. In most cases you will require a router of some description.

Yeah we had 10 IP addresses. I thought were just saying it wouldnt work because they were hubs and not routers. I wasnt thinking about the IP addresses.
