View Full Version : FSB not higher than 83MHz! Why?
Hi!
Why I can't get a FSB higher than 83MHz on my Celeron II 600? Its running fine until this point but at 84MHz it won't start. This is the point when the PCI Speed switches from 1/2 to 1/3. The VCore is @1.7V and the CPU is pretty cool (cooler: Tiger Micropool, SILENT! :-) ). My mainboard is an ABIT VH6-II. There aren't any Jumpers to set( except CCMOS, IR and On-bord-sound-switch)

Welcome to the Forum!
ok, here is what you need. More voltage. Here is the problem I know that VH6-1 doesn't let you go over 1.7v, but I'm not sure about VH6-II. Also you really have to make sure the chip is cool before uping the voltage.
One solution is to vidpin your CPU. You can find a guide Here (http://members.prestige.net/newbie_doo/webpage/vcore_adjust.html) or Here (http://www.wildandyc.co.uk/vidpinfrm.htm) or Here (http://www.hardocp.com/articles/intel_stuff/bumpvoltage.html).
Make sure you stick around in the forum and ask all of the questions you have. Vidpinning is not that easy to do, but once you understand it, you'll get there.
Also do you know the stepping of your CPU?

One of the reasons I got a "slottie" mobo was that the vlots can be changed on the slocket.... (but that's not much help to you...)
The older abit boards (BH6, BE6-II,etc.) had the voltage tweak.
You reflashed your BIOS with the volts set to the highest you could get, with the command Awdflash biosname /cc, and you get another 0.2volts to play with I think there's an article off the front page about it.
I'm not sure if it works on more modern abit boards, but if it don't all you've done is reflashed your BIOS and cleared the CMOS memory. (If you confident enough to flash your BIOS, then you'll lose nothing by trying it- UNLESS IT GOES WRONG, but then it could have gone wrong if you flash it normally...)

If you can't boot at 84mhz FSB take it to 100mhz FSB. I have a 633 celeron 2 that doing 952mhz right now. Here is the way to get you stepping on that chip.
http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/icp.htm
All you need to do is pull the heatsink off. and look at the numbers on the CPU its a combo of Letters and Numbers. That makes up your s-code. Once you find it go to the link I posted and chet the S-code Vs your CPU make and you will find you core Stepping. As for most Motherboads even if they reduce the PCI and APG at a FSB of 84 its still running your PCI to far out of spec.
My Vid card won't post at 84mhzFSB because the APG is stepped up so high.
tried voltage tweak on my BP6...didn't work....had to reflash bios
ended up wiring CPU to get voltage above 1.7...it took about an hour, and it was a pain in the ace, but now i have a nice range to play with....cele566 running solid at 1.85v

Thanks for the reference to my page...sorry it hasn't been updated in a while.
Something to consider: You may be experiencing trouble because of your video card and the AGP divider. If this is the case, you mat actually be able to boot at a higher FSB speed, as long as it has the higher divisor that brings the AGP and PCI busses closer to spec. Believe it or not, running my Celeron2-600 was next to impossible at 83MHz FSB, but it runs just fine at 106MHz. The difference in the AGP speeds is a contributing factor.
Try a higher speed and let us know how it goes.

first thanx for so much response... the o/c-forum has a new fan :)
the stepping of my celeron is a 0683 so the devault core is 1.5V
i've already tried a higher FSB than 84MHz to get the PCI-Bus back to the old values. with 100MHz and 1/3 multiplier it should have the same speed like at 66MHz FSB and 1/2. didn't work.
the tip with vidpinning is very interesting, i will try that, already downloaded the intel datasheeds :-)
But by the way could you explain the bios-flashing-secret?

Hi Kritz,
You have the same chip of mine, a Celeron 2 600 cB0 1.5v that I have vid pinned for 1.7v (for the same prob of yours) ad after OCed @900Mhz trought Bios, rising Fsb to 100Mhz and voltage to 1.8-1.85v.
With mine is impossible to set higher freq. than 900 stable.
I hope it helps you :-)
...and it works!!!! i mean vid pinning! And it was REALLY easy! thanx to you, overclockers! my celeron is now running at 810 MHz, 90MHz FSB. Didn't testet stability and max temperature, yet, but it's running!
And i'm shure it can run faster!

A suggestion: check your temps and if right (around 40 degree C) rise the Fsb on 100Mhz :-)
ThX, i already tried that! but @97MHz FSB it's getting unstable, it means Unreal didn't get started. The Temp is OK, 41°C with 1.85VCore . Now i try to get my Cellie cooler then it should work

Kriz, now you must go with Fsb@100Mhz, coz with 83, 90 and others you get non standard Pci & AGP freq.

Your so close I think with a some burning in to get your CPU used to the new CV you may get to 100 :) it has worked for me twice on this CPU once when i was maxed at 1.9CV and then rite after i vidpinned for 2.10 so there is hope, also this should help you as it helped me make sure your sideband is disabled in your registry I was stuck for a while until i made the change. You can find the info on this in the tips section under videocard performance.

Congrads!
and I am sitting here, preparing for it. Taking my time researching and things, and you did it just like that! WTG!
Newbie_Doo - :) your vidpinning guide was the first one I found, and it helped to answer a lot of questions. Thanks for writing it!

Thanks. I still cannot find that photo of the back of the CPU with the wires wrapped. One of my upcoming projects is to finish the main page of the site and also the watercooling how-to. I still have more HTML to learn though before that will be done.

Uhm, the 'watercooling how-to' seems to be interesting, especially for guys like me not experienced on it :-)
