Ok fellas, I've been talking about it for a while and I finally did it. I removed the heat spreader from my K6-2. Someone warned me about this, and now its a fact. I need something (preferably copper) to go between my existing HSF and the core ( about the same length as a Duron core, but skinnier). So it needs to be about 3/4 of an inch square, and I am going to connect it to my hsf permanently via Arctic Silver Epoxy.I was thinking of lapping an old, all-copper penny flat but I really dont have any practical way to do this, as it will take forever. Can I get a flat, 2 or 3 mm thick piece of copper somewhere? Like maybe at a hardware store or something. It wouldnt have to be perfectly flat as I could lap it. Ok, lets hear some ideas.

Aren't pennies about 2 to 3mm thick already? If you want to wear down the sides faster just use coarser sharpening stone or sandpaper (Si carbide or Al oxide only).

I'd go for a piece of silver. It doesn't cost all that much and it'll transfer heat better. Look around at art supply store in your area and on the web. My roomate is an art major and he buys silver at Pearl Art and off the web all the time. Plus it would be kinda cool to say you have a silver heat plate.
Go to a coin shop and look for a silver coin larger than a penny. The idea is to spread the heat so you want a decent sized coin.

I never considered Silver. I'll look into it.
It's all fine and dandy to use a coin but the problem is that I dont really have the tools to make a coin nice and flat - which is why I would like to try to find a piece of copper or silver that is relatively flat (a coin is NOT) with minimal lapping required. Mostly the problem is I need to make up for the lost space between the cpu and the hsf because the cpu will not sit flat anymore (hits some caps). I've heard you can get copper flashing for decorative roofs and such. Is this stuff thick enough? I dont want to have to layer the stuff, as it introduces extra mating surfaces that need to be lapped and epoxied.

I have some copper stock I used on my PIII.
I can throw it in with the HD. I'll get it out today.

Probably 1.25 inches x 1.25 inches would be big enough, then I could strap that sucker to other processors too. If you've got that much, otherwise about 7/8th inch square will do. Thanks again!!
