My galaciator popped off and it fried my 1.33. I want to know if there are alternative and better ways to mount that sucker so it doesn't happen again.

Yea just popped off, I moved the tower a little bit and I think it got loose or something.

That heatsink is way to hefty to leave it on when your moving your case around. Mine is held on without any extra mounting and it's been fine. If you plan on moving it frequently I'd look at extra mounting hardware.. I wouldn't know what to recommend but your story definitely has put the fear of frying into me :)

I'd look in to rigging something up with those mobo mounting holes... something like what Hoot did for the front page a while back. This is a big reason why i am leaning towards a Swiftech or one of those new Alphas instead of a Glaciator or a SK6.

Well,I'v moved mine quite a bit and had no problems,Did it break the mounting tab off the board or just fall off? You could try putting a wire tie looped around some part of the case and around the underside of the hs.I'v thought about this and if mine does ever fall off i might lose my video card also,it would be the first thing it would hit. Other then that, make sure its on secure and be carefull when moving it. If your moving it out of the house like to a LAN party or something like that i would take it off.

Maybe I'm just lucky....
but I move my comp almost daily (drive of about a couple miles)
I have an a7a, a glaciator, and a shim...lay the comp on its side, and everything is fine...

I guess I've got something coming, eh?

Are you sure you had the clips on all the way? I know that when I was installing mine I noticed that the clip didn't want to go all the way on unless I pushed it in with a screwdriver.

if u have a tower wouldnt that fall down and bust your video card and pci cards?????????

Yes it was mounted correctly because I had to lap the hsf. It didn't come completely off, it was still hanging by the bottom clip.

Um...how are correct mounting and lapping the hsf connected? Just curious...

So were one of the tabs broken? If not, I believe the sink wasn't mounted correctly.

Well.....I've had my Glaciator for about 6 weeks now. My house is on a crawl space and when one of my little ones come bounding through the room it feels like an earthquake.

Used to make me nervous, imagining the sound of my computer being completely destroyed by that falling boulder of a heatsink (it would probably sound like an avalanche).

Hasn't happened yet, though I do check it frequently.

I attended a LAN party the other night. I thought of removing the Glaciator but decided to risk the drive. I laid my mid size tower case on it's side on the back seat figuring that it would put a lot less stress on the socket lugs. I had no problems, but I must admit that I was a little paranoid of potholes. Both ways the trip was 60 miles and I had no problems.

Bottom line the clips hold the sink on pretty well but I would stress being careful. I'm sure that rough handling would result in tragedy.

Well, I made sure I mounted it correctly by pulling up a little on it. I checked the connection on both sides and they seemed ok. Maybe I didn't mount it right. I don't know what could have happend. I might try to mount it a different way.

Does anyone know if they sell a alternative mounting retention system using those four holes.

So were the plastic 'tabs' on the actual socket broken?

I'm sorry about your recent loss. If and when I mount a Glaciator, it will have a safety tether. That HSF is so heavy that I'm afraid to use it.

Where can i get a safty tehar to put over my new millenium Glaciator!!!

You could just make one with some string or something. Just make it relatively tight (so the bugger can't fall too far and break the string).

I must have close to thirty installs of the Glaciator while testing various CPUs and motherboards on the bench. It is possible to get the clip to hold when it's not seated properly on the ZIF socket. Perhaps this is what happened. I take a good look at the way the clip is seated with my calibrated eyeball before firing up a system.

I have been using a Glaciator for awhile now. Due to its massive size, I switched to a desktop case so the HSF would be horizontal! Unfortunately, I may have to switch back to a tower since the desktop case doesn't have enough bays for my RAID drive setup! I have located a convertible case (tower/desktop) that claims to have 7 bays or so, but I haven't actually seen one up close. With shipping, I'm not sure I want to risk that much unless I have more confidence in what I'm buying.
Anybody else seen any good desktop cases?
Anybody treid cable ties thru the mobo holes as an extra anchor?

If you are real paranoid, run small diameter shock cord (bungie) over the Glaciator and through the four holes in the motherboard. Use the push button fitting runners use on thier shoes to snug and secure the shock cord.

well i if that thing crushed my new geforce 2 pro i would kill it through it against the wall and stuff so what would an alternative to the Galaciator. But still have the same power. Im thinkin of the thermalright sk6 with a delta 38cfm.

I have the same HSF. All you need to do is remove the grill, then pop the fan out, remove the clip, bend it so it fits tighter on the mobo, then reinstall everything. I can roll my puter all over the house and there is no problem with irt popping off( its on wheels). This will cure the problem.

The problem is not the security of the clips, but the potential energy of the sink breaking the tabs. The clip is fine, it's the weight jolting the tabs that needs to be worried about.
