Does anyone here have a Dell 4600? I am having the hardest time trying to install my raptor drive as the primary drive.
In bios it keeps saying unknown device
the bios is the latest one
is it jumper settings? i doubt it but

no we tend to build our own...
notice everytime you want to change something on your dell...
It refuses to let you?
Friends dont let friends buy dells.
What does their "award winning" tech support have to say?
That would probably be the best tack to take....

Their award winning Dell support likes to read from script and does not know the basis of the problem....
The award winning dell offered to replace my 74gb raptor since it seems that to them it was the cause of the problem and then scratched their heads and wondered why that HDD was not in their system.
I also like building computers of my own but This is suppose to hold me until AMD 939 cpus come out and the chipset matures in 8 months to a year.

LOL
thats funny...
they thought it came with the system..
duh...
anyways just check out possible mobo updates and it does support SATA right?
dumb question but I gotta ask...
I assume you have been through the bios settings thoroughly...
normally you must intall drivers F6 style unless mobo supports sata natively...
sorry about the smartaleck bit,,,but I have had too many customers who were going to have me build them a system come back later and said...I bought a dell..then they want you to get it running right....
and or upgrade it since it runs like a pos....
which ends up being similar to the mess you got....
grrrr.....

lol, first thing I did was check for a new bios. It seems that I am not the only one with this problem. Numberous people can't seem to install a SATA drive onto the dell.
The mobo is a 865G, it comes standard with SATA support.
The problem is that the bios will not recognize the drive and keeps telling me it is an unknown drive.
Arggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Did it come with any bootable software that would allow you to format the drive. Some drives have to be formatted before a propriatary computer will recognize them.

nope, nada...most newer systems will recog a drive without it being formatted...it looks at the firmware
