View Full Version : [winXP] can't shut down, reboots instead
Hey,
I just built my first computer yestrday and things are coming along pretty well :)
I'm just sorting out a few issues though, one strange but annoying one is that my computer won't shut down (!)
When I shut down through the start menu, the computer goes through the normal shutting down steps, but right where the system should power down, fans should stop, etc... it restarts.
I''m not sure where I should look to solve this problem. I updated the motherboard bios (nf7-s) to the latest version from abit (23),. and looked through the bios settings and also windows settings, but nothing seemed to be set incorectly.
my power supply is a zalman zm300a-apf.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!
Also, congrats on your first build!! w00t!! :bday: I remember my first build :D Fun isnt it? Well I personnally was kinda nervouse.
Anyways, there are sevral issues that could be causing this, in the BIOS it could be set to auto restart or something similar. I would first try clearing the CMOS jumper. For more information on how to do that look at your motherboard manual or visit www.abit-usa.com and look for your manual online. You can also just unplug it, remove the battery (the coin shaped batery) and put it back in after 10 seconds.
If that does not solve your problems, try re plugging in the power switch to the motherboard, something could be wrong there and it is shorting it.
Another could be the PSU wires for the motherboard not in correctly and doing wierd things. Probably not the situation here, but try unplugging the PSU connector from the motherboard and plugging it back in again.
Although, what I think is most likely your problem is a software problem. It might be doing the restart command for shutdown or something.
Good Luck!

BTW, you got a nice system, whoopass mobo, whoopass proc., whoopass heatsink and fan :D
my cousin's computer was blue-screening when he shutdown. Yours might be doing the same thing, but is set to automatically reboot. I'll try to ask him if he ever fixed it, or just reinstalled windows.

One of mine did that before. After my PSU blew something happened that kept causing windows to reboot instead of shutting down. Something with the fail safe-blah blah blah. I called Microsoft and they were able to fix it for me. To fix it I had to uncheck "Automatically Restart" under "Sytem Failure". To get there you right-click on "My Computer">Properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovery
If that doesn't "fix" your problem then I don't know what else to say.
if its restarting and not shuting down it cud be bios settings perhaps the s1 s3 resume settings read up on them not oversure their use
you guys are awesome!
I unchecked that auto restart option in system properties, and guess what, now I get a blue error screen right when it used to reboot.
It was something about AGP; probably the crappy graphics card I have: a [PCI] S3 Trio64V+ By crappy I mean it struggles when scrolling through websites in internet explorer.... Today I just got a sapphire 9600xt, that should clear things up :D
Yeah, it was a fun build. The only stressful part was installing the heatsink., but I managed to do it without breaking anything.
I know you pretty much solved the problem, but it's a common NF7-S occurence, and I had the same problem awhile back as well. For me, re-installing the nVidia motherboard drivers solved the problem, but there are also some other solutions as well. The PCI graphics card, as you mentioned, is most likely the culprit, and the 9600xt should fix things completely.
