friends laptop got attacked by a virus and now will not boot up, what can i do to get back data or remove the virus and get windows working again

Will it POST? Did you try "Safe Mode"? You may be in the position of doing a complete reinstall, or, depending on the OS, trying a repair from the installation CD.

Perhaps try some sort of bootable OS like some form of Linux. Network it to another computer and use something like Samba to copy the files over and run a virus checker in the background.

Then use any supplied recovery CDs to reinstall the OS.

Knoppix or Overclockix would be perhaps the best thing to use?
