I still get that slow down that I posted before & kinda figured
out the cause. Like I said after opening & closing a bunch of folders things start to slow down big time! A lot of you guys thought it was memory issues & had a bunch of suggestions & they ALL helped in troubleshooting the problem,THANKS TO EVERYBODY! I did notice that the CPU cycles were maxing out when this happens & I have nothing running in the background except for Explorer & Systray, made sure by ctrl+alt+del everything I didn't need. Even after waiting for an hour it still wouldn't let go of the CPU cycles but if I tried to run anything it would work without any real difference, even tried running Sandra & I got the same scores. Why won't it release the CPU cycles? The effect of this is a slow down in data access and the slow down of Explorer(that is what you use to view things). I defrag, update my NortonAV 5.0 & do proper maintenance. Is this normal for 98SE?

"I'm not a very smart man...." but yeah, mine seems to do that also..... ME did not do that (it just shut everything down with a "XXX has caused an error in Kernal32.dll, XXX will now close" message..... every 30 seconds or so LOL..... I am back to 98se now, and am finding myself having to reboot after a few hours of multitasking windows on the net..... (sigh to have the advanced technology of the 1985 motorola 68000 series processor and the speed of my Ive Been Misled... :>) Mine seems to have the problem wheather I am using the CPU full out or not..... so I just run SETI full time, and reboot every few hours that I need to be on the web LOL....

HAHAHA!!! DAMN !@#$% This is really no good. I'm glad to finally hear that someone has a similar problem but it shouldn't happen! I too have to reboot every couple of hours or so just so that I don't end up killing the computer! Have you ever thought about shifting to WIN2000PRO? Have you ever tried to figure this problem out?

I just had a little thought. Perhaps there is a memory leak somewhere and when your memory is full its struggling to put in new info in there and is not being released by Windows itself. The cause could be anything and I know its a long shot. i have run 98se and had the same problems. My only solution is a clean install. I know its not what you want to hear. But with a fresh face you can easily tell if that was the situation. Think about it some perhaps a idea.

I just did a clean install. I'm thinking that my version of 98se,4.something, has all the bugs in the world. Trying W2kPro & the interface is slow:( & can't get SBLive stuff to work & it won't let me install any 4in1 drivers or the 686B patch that all VIA chiset owners,KT133, need to install if you have a SBLive soundcard. Back to 98se.......I don't know anymore.

I just installed Win2k on my comuter and to get it to load I had to pull everything out but the floppy and CD Rom and set the BIOS back to defaults. After I did that it loadded with no problems.
Hope this helps.

It's all fixed I hope(not yet slowing down). After trying W2k and having nothing work properly I shifted back to 98se. Changing back to fat32 from ntfs seems to have cured the problem. WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE SLOW FOLDER ACCESS? Would be nice to figure it out.

The SB Live! has drivers specific for Win Millenium, and Win2K. If you don't have them, you might run into problems. As for the slow acsess, might be your settings in Win. When was the last time you defragged your Hdd? That coupled with Win's ability to hang onto memory like there's no tomorrow (even though it says it has 90% of resources free), could be another problem.

Thanks for all the help guys & girls! Everything still seems ok & goin' strong.
To CristalMethod, I had all the specific drivers for W2KPRO but none of them workd except for video & nic. I went back to 98SE 'cause I just didn't want a new headache for now. I will be trying W2KPRO when I get the urge to.

did you try a disk defrag?
