View Full Version : Video Card Cooling?
I have the Hercules Geforce2 GTS 64MB .
and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade the HS and fan.
I've seen a few different modified HSF's put on them but I'm wondering if it really gets that hot???
I have a few old heatsinks around but they seem really big for a V Card....

I think I have an answer for your question. I have an ATI video card with 16MB and I wanted to try to cool it a little and see what it does. so I took of the small HS that was on the GPU cut the edges of a Pentium1 HS so the 40mm fan would fit on glued it to the GPU the temp dropped a little and the performance were noticibly increased, I would suggest using a therma paste, I didn't because I didn't have it. Tommorow hopfully I'll get some therma paste and see what difference will it make.
Would silver paste 2 hold it on the V card?
Thats the biggest problem now is how to hold it on.
I've overclocked the card a little and I don't see any problems yet...no flickers or anything.
I do have the cyclone fan right under it also. and its pullin 42CFM, so I'm sure thats helpin alot

My mod helped me quite a bit. And yes, some GPUs REALLY get hot!
I've used thermal tape to hold it on, as well as arctic silver adhesive. Both can hold it there easily it seems - and I got a couple of hundred extra 3Dmarks because it would allow me to OC higher! :)
I took the sorry *ss sink off and put a 10 dollar Blue orb on with Artic Silver.....It let me up the core to 235. The memory is a different story......buy a 20 dollar Card Cooler to put over the card........it let me take my memory up to 426. These are GeForce 2 GTS Pro numbers.
Hope this helps,

To attatch the heatsink, apply the AS2 over the whole chip except the corners, put some super glue in the corners, press the heatsink on and apply pressure for about a minute, and it should hold, this is what I did with the blorb on my mobo chipset.
is the card still going to run when I unplug the fan it came with.
I'm sure the card isn't strong enough to plug in this new HSF I want to use.
man those are some awersome number for a gts pro.
I would love to get mine that high
yep, the card will run fine if you unplug the original fan.
but don't plug the new fan in on the vid card... you might blow something if the fans draws too much power. rather use a mobo header.
My card is the same as yours....A GeForce 64MB Hercules GTS........The Blue orb comes with pins that let you attach the fan with the existing holes from your fan. Plug the lead into your motherboard...and off you go!! I personnaly would'nt mess with another larger heatsink then this. The reviews have been very good as compared to the stock fan. Upping the core isn't going to give you much in FPS...the memory is the key, or more exactly, the combination of the core and memory speeds....but mainly the memory. You have got to cool those memory chips to get added MhZ. Remember......a very thin coating of Artic Silver on the core.

I agree with most of what has been stated except this is my take:
When you apply the orb mix a small amount of Arctic Silver 2 grease with arctic Silver Epoxy, and when I say a small amount, I do mean small, like 90% Epoxy - 10% AS2, I then let it cure for about 4 hours before use.
Is the Cyclone cooler good for cooling the memory?
I have it under my card and its pullin 42CFM out of the case.
with the stock fan now I'm runnin at 210 core and 250 memory. I haven't really tried to go any higher, cuz when I play my games the all look great so I didn't want to risk fryin my card.
oops I ment 350 for memory:)
