Hey guys ...

A buddy of mine just dumped an A7A133 mobo on me, and I have nothing to do with it at the moment. However, since I have 256MB of PC133 SDRAM at home in a PIII 450 system (and this board uses up to PC133 RAM ... don't know how well it will OC from there), I figured I buy a relatively cheap AMD processor and swap out this board and processor with my PIII and Abit BX6 board.

This board is supposed to take up to a 1.4Ghz processor (again, don't know how far the board can actually OC), and 266FSB. When I build my new system, this will go in the rig in the living room hooked up to the TV so occasional users can play a game of CS, play some NES Roms, check their email, etc. with my old Riva TNT2 Ultra 32MB card.

What's a good, solid AMD chip to stick in this thing that I can mess around overclocking with a little, too? The nice thing is, if I burn it up, I can always throw back in the P3 and Abit board, and be good to go again.

I'd really like to spend $60 or less on the processor, if at all possible, and I haven't heard great things about the OCing potential of these old ASUS boards.

Just wanted some input (and if you happen to have a chip for sale, maybe an offer ... lol). :D

Thanks,
Dave

Here is a list of Chips here (http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx) , go to mother board query , then select your board and then it will give you a list

Looks like your motherboard, according to that sheet, can support up to a 2600+ or a Applebred Duron 1.8ghz. If it were me, I'd grab a 1.4 or 1.6ghz Applebred. They're very inexpensive and pretty good overclockers too.

MAKE SURE YOU FOLD!!! :D:D

Are the Tbreds better overclockers than the durons, typically?

Edit: And what about the Tbred cores compared to the Thortons?

Depends what T-Bred you manage to get. Some were absolutely wonderful, the T-Bred B's, DLT3C type. They would do 2.7 GHz.

Thortons aren't too hot. 1.6 GHz Durons are though. They'll do 2.4 GHz if you are lucky. Run at a 133 MHz FSB. Set it to 200 MHz on a new mobo and you have 2.4 GHz. You want to try get your hands on an unlocked one though, because obviously you are not going to get such a high FSB. Locked ones have a 12x multiplier.

But you know, even if you don't manage to get it to overclock, £25 for a CPU is not too shady at all. OK, so it has a small cache memory which will hamper performance a bit, but if you are feeling brave/lucky/stupid you could always have a go at re-enabling it.

Up to you though. I recommend the Durons. They're cheap, they're powerful, they're fun.
