Ok Ive decided to dedicate a box to Linux. I just want to know what is the best free version out there. Im a first time user (well sort of) and I want somthing that has a gui and is easily configured. Once I get my feet wet Ill start doing more stuff. Just throw out some ideas.

A lot of people recommend Mandrake. With good reason. It is rather user-friendly (for Linux.)

I personally, like Progeny Linux. It is a "nice" version of debian that incorporates a smooth method of upgrading linux packages. Once you've tried apt-get; there's no going back to anything else. And once you've had a taste of Progeny; there's no going back to any other distros. :)

I've tried Progeny and Mandrake. They're both good, but I've had some trouble with Progeny's installer.

I'm just getting my feet wet in the operating system arena as well. Although I can't compare it to any other, I found Mandrake 8.0 to be a breeze to install and it basically sets itself up. Once up and running though the I've found the challenge begins, but I'm working through it and learning it in my spare time.

Good Luck!

as of right now Im on my 3rd install of mandrake 8.0

1st install a friend of mine hit the power button on the computer so its not mandrake's fault

2nd install I got all the way to the end and the computer froze when it was setting up x-windows

I hope 3rd time is the charm

old s3 trio based card

I think I have a matrox mistique 220 around here somewhere do you think that would work?

I was thinking the same thing. Ill pull another card out of a different computer and see if I can get it to work. I realy want it to work.

It might work, I've installed Mandrake on 2 and a half computers with no problems. (The half is my computer before I did massive upgrading to it, basically changing out everything)

well its not the video card I installed a different one and it did the exact same thing.

The only thing I could think of is this computer is oced but on 33Mhz Ill try down clocking it lol back to 200Mhz but Im sure thats not it. Its installed every windows (95,98,nt,2000) operating system with no problems but I guess that could be it.

Is there any concievable way it could be the monitor its a realy crapy old one and it does say its configureing for video card and monitor but that would be a realy dumb reason.

I do have a copy of radhat 6.0 lounging arround somewhere I might just throw that in and see what happens.

Where are all the linix junkies here ??? Im going to start bashing this os realy quick if I cant even get it to load. Im deffinetly an advanced user so If I cant do it why do you think joe sixpack is going to try. :)
