View Full Version : Ashes of the Phoenix

Summary: What had become the first systematic attempt to search for another world's intelligent radio communications has wound down. Project Phoenix will transition to more advanced search methods, but its pioneering status has become part of history.

Prohect Phoenix (http://www.seti.org/seti/our_projects/project_phoenix/Welcome.html) has left the building. There are empty spaces at Arecibo Observatory, but not for long. A new computer cluster is destined for the space occupied by fifteen Programmable Detection Modules. The cabinets that stored the spare components for the Phoenix search system are already reassigned to the RFI Monitoring and Electronics groups.

For the staff at Arecibo, another SETI project has ended, and life at the observatory goes on. But for us, life is in transition as we wrap up one project and begin another. As we wait in California for our equipment to arrive from Puerto Rico, it is a good time to look back on Project Phoenix. It wasn't "just another" SETI project.

...

A few searches have used large telescopes, but they typically scan the sky and are limited to a single frequency band. Most of the time, these searches do not observe stars in our galaxy, but are actually looking at stars millions of light years away. In the fraction of time they observe stars in the Milky Way, they only spend 10 to 20 seconds per star. Phoenix only observed nearby stars in our galaxy and so could devote from 100 to 550 seconds per star per frequency band.

Gaussians are the power curves produced when the Arecibo beam scans a steady celestial radio source. The signal is weak at first, strong when it is at the center of the beam, and then fades again. This produces a bell shaped power curve known as a gaussian.

Pulses represent any celestial radio signal of a fixed frequency that is distinguishable above the background noise.

Triplets are a sets of 3 equally spaced spikes. Whereas gaussians represent a constant signal from space, triplets may represent a series of pulses transmitted at fixed time intervals.

...

t was a major advance over all other SETI programs, but its superlatives will not last. New, more powerful searches will be made in the coming decades that will make the sensitivity, number of stars and frequency coverage of Phoenix seem small in comparison.

But, it will always be our first big step in exploring our part of the Milky Way.

So after nine-plus years of bringing a complex system of electronics to Australia, West Virginia, Georgia, England and Puerto Rico, Project Phoenix is over. We observed more than a million star-MHz, processed millions of signals, but found no evidence of another technological civilization in our galactic neighborhood. Only one task remains, to write the papers for the scientific journals. In the process of writing those reports, we also gather the "lessons learned," an important part of preparing for the next search.

So when does the next project start? And when will my current SETI client no longer be able to get more units?

As a member of Team 32 I invite you to the Folding forum. Come fly up the ranks and help us move up from 3rd place to 1st with all your Farms of SETI computers.

Agreed - as another 32 folder I think it would be great, and allow all you SETI-ers a chance for more competition while contributing to a good cause for both health and overclockers.com.

Sorry to hear about SETI shutting down. I know you guys have been as commited to SETI as we folders are to our chosen DC. Folding at home team 32 wants you to join our ranks and help fullfill our goal of first place. We are one of three teams [H], OCAU and OCers in the top tier of folding. Link to Stats (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=) We could use your help in obtaining that goal. Don't waste those CPU cycles. Put em to good use folding. Its a very easy setup and stable program for both AMD and Intel farms. We are manning the Folding section 24/7 to help you guys with any questions you may have. You'll get fast response to those questions and find friendly folks there also.

Yes, come and fold with us. We are all friendly and we can tell you how to set it up, we have everything in team 32. Even wars. Currently we have WWIII, but the return of the fishy (he will loose :() and the fellowship of the max ;) lol.

SETI @ Home is not dead nor is it even dying! What was reported was merely one other part of the multi-faceted project collectively referred to as SETI. The SETI @ Home project appears to have plenty of wind in it's sails still, and Southern Hemisphere observations are still to come.

Thanks for all your kind offers, but while looking inward through the microscope is indeed noble and necessary, looking outward through the telescope is still a viable and worthwhile venture as well.

Respectfully,
SkyHook

or you could come fold for team 32................ =P

Seriously eitherway as long as those cycles are going to ocforums pwnness over hardocp im happy.

Nicely said...

Many of us have folded at one time or another just to check it out or when SETI was having bandwidth issues and not distributing WU's....

but after 3+ years of crunching I'm in it for the long haul, so thanks for the offers OC folders but I'll keep on crunchin

I agree with Deez, That was very well written Skyhhok. I hope our pleas for help have not offended anyone on the seti team. I was under the impression seti was going to be shutting down for awhile then firing back up with phase II. I know you guys have lots o powah and was hoping to see that powah converted to the other great team at Overclockers Forums as were my fellow folders.

Its statements like Skyhooks and the thousands of other simalar statements that make this forum such a great place. Indeed both projects have thier merrits and the dedicated folks of both projects have my respect and admiration.

Fold/Crunch On fellow forum members. These are Noble causes.

I was in no way "offended", on the contrary it is somewhat flattering that you guys keep an eye on us and make sure our CPU Cycles won't go to waste. But just as I could never claim to know all the technical goings on within the Stanford Folding Project, neither could you guys be expected to have a complete knowledge of Berkeley's plans(Lord knows sometimes we don't), so I was just passing on some info.

The reality of Overclockers.com's Distributed Computing efforts is that our membership in the forums allows us to support TWO well respected and strong teams. That's something to be proud of no matter which side of the fence you lean towards!

Now that folks, is a very literal, intelligent and to the point comment on both teams. ....inward though the mircroscope....outward though the telescope.......M A R V E L O U S!!!!!! That comment I'll use a lot from now on..............HOOAH!

BTW in case you guys ever want to add any kind of minescule computational power to help Team 32 FAH, you are always, very welcomed indeed!
