Well, I'm upgrading an old Pentium system I have with a K6-2 chip. Because of motherboard limitations I'm going to have to run the CPU at a minimum of 2.5v. I have an Alpha PAL6035 for the cooling duties. Would the removal of the 'heat plate' be necessary?

I've also heard that removing the plate, adding thermal paste, then putting the plate back on is effective. Is this an option?

Or is all this a waste of time for a CPU that is going to run 50Mhz under frequency spec? (I'm probably going to end up at 6.0 x 75=450)

WTF K6-2 on an Intel Board, I hope I have read something wrong. Aren't the sockets, northbridge support and voltage completely different?

Anyway, if you want to cool your K6-2 dont remove the cap. Re-apply it with AS2. Remember the core of the K6-2 is even easier to crush than the K7s.

It's a socket 7 Intel 440HX chipset. It supports split voltages and up to an 83mhz FSB. It's gonna work.

I got the CPU in and it's running at 500mhz without a hitch.(6.0x83) It seems to be running fairly cool at 2.5v with my Alpha PAL6035 on it. The sink doesn't even feel warm. Woohoo! In benchmarks it's up about 10x in performance.

Good thing this isn't my main system. Hehehehe.

If you take the aluminum cap off you wont have to worry about putting it back on. It's not going back on if you take it off.
