View Full Version : [HELP] Duron 1.8ghz 133FSB chip vs 2500+....
Mr.Guvernment

Hey all
my friends girl friends computer kicked it in - so i went to the comp store and got the cheapest stuff they had as she did not want to spend alot...
the cheapest CPU they had was a Duron 1.8ghz chip - i did not know Durons went this high? and runs @ 133FSB....
now - in my system i have a xp 2500+ locked barton that does not O/C for crap. i got a A7N8X-E Deluxe board.
i assume - this duron - it seems to be unlocked - the multi 13.5x and have the FSB @ 170 so far but have it @ 1.7v into the chip - would not boot on 1.65.
i got it to post - have no installed windows so far.
Now, stupid question - i assume this "duron" is better then my XP2500+ barton locked
Do they perform the same when both run @ 1.8GHz?
let me know.....
if this chip is better, what should i try the multiplyer @ to get best results?

there isnt much cache on the new durons, i think it would prolly be better for the 2500+, and there wont be any overclocking so why would it matter?

Those Duron's have a nice OC , ive seen a few hit 2.4ghz. that one at 2295Mhz is really good to
only bad thing is the Duron only has 64k L2 whille the 2500 is the barton core with 512k L2 , so that will give the 2500 a boost in performance.
for the multi if its unlocked , you really got to test it out and find which multi works the best

Okay, so even if i over clock that duron to 2295 stable - i would be better off with the 2500?
this system would be used mainly for video encoding / dvd burning - listening to music.
OR i could turn it inot my gaming system if @ 2295 it would be faster then a p4 2.4 @ 2.9GHz ?

First off the P4 will be better @2.9ghz than the Duron@2295.
Second.I did i lil test last week.XP2400 15x133fsb@2ghz vs
XP2500 11x166@1.84 and the XP2500 beat the XP2400 by1,200
points in 3Dmark2001.
I had to run the the XP2400@15x147@2.2ghz to get the same score as the XP2400 so i dont think the Duron @2295mhz will be much better than the XP2500 because of the very small L2 cache.
It might be much worse.

In your test, the processor was not the bottleneck, the fsb was. If the multi is unlocked, your duron would do better than the barton.

Without knowing what board your trying to run both processors in the conversation is kinda pointless....
There is no way the Duron will ever equal even a locked Barton on an nForce2 board because you can just set the Barton at the 200 Mhz FSB setting and know it will run no problem. Even if the Duron will work at the 200 Mhz FSB the Bartons going to jump from a 1830 clock all the way to a 2200 clock which equals a XP3200. The Duron is completely out classed.... Forget the Duron, give it to your friends girlfriend and know you made the right choice....

You are so wrong. I have a locked 2500+ barton at 200x11 and I have an unlocked 1.4 duron at 200x12.5. The duron is definately better.

Durons are very good chips. Also the short pipeline of XPs make cache a non issue.
However eventhough its not that much of a boost...its still a boost

thing is this is a locked barton so no i can not just go to 3200 speeds.
BUT - does not matter now as i am likely selling this system - friend @ works old pIII 733 hard drive just died and instead of getting a new one i offered him this system for $600.
No, that is not high - prices here in costa rica are a joke!
this system cost me $878 (cost my work as it was for an accountant)
amd barton locked 2500+
Abit Kv7..? i think it is
256 pc2100
32mb AGP Sis 2x AGp card
crap case with 300w power supply
40g WD HD
17' no name monitor
now, dont break down and cry! i know it is sad - this is why i buy all my computer stuff when ever i go to canada :D
So this system for $600 will include
Asus A7n8X-e Deluxe (board alone cost $200 here)
baront 2500+
512 samsung pc3200
MSI g4 ti 4200 128mb 4x (o/c to 310 / 515 from 250 / 450)
120g IBM
Case
400w PSU
52x Asus black cdrom
What a deal!

Mr G. , have you thought of getting a mobile 2500 , there all unlocked and low voltage and are clocking to like 2.5Ghz to 2.8ghz
Mr. G remarked,
"the cheapest CPU they had was a Duron 1.8ghz chip - i did not know Durons went this high? and runs @ 133FSB...."
A little bit of history...
Durons 900mhz and down were t-bird cores also known as spitfires.
Durons 950mhz to 1.3ghz were palomino cores also known as morgans.
Durons 1.4ghz to 1.8ghz are t-bred cores also known as appalbreds.
We also have durons with barton cores also known as thortons. I don't what speed range they have.

both chips being equal fsb and multi the xp will be a lil faster in benchmarks. but thats with both chip being equal. if the xp is stock and the duron is oced then the duron should be faster. i had a xp 2100 at stock it performed slower then the duron oced. but when both were oc to the same speed the 2100 was faster but not by all that much. in the real world i dont think you will really see to much of an increase. i personally like the duron tho it is a lil slower. if you do have an unlocked duron which i dont think you do, drop the multi and find the highest fsb that your hardware will run. then up the muti to your final oc. these chips are fun and they can take a beating. i just droped mine down from 2.0vcore to1.75v cuz the weather is getting warmer but other then that its still running almost 2.3ghz.
Edit:
i did do some testing with higher oc and it would boot and do a 1 hour prime at just under 2.6ghz. although it was freezing outside and it was breathing ice cold outside air. none the less it did it so these chips do oc very well with good hardware and cooling.

thnx for the info wju425,
dead_man311 - i had thought that exact same thing, then i thought right now i have 4 computers and 2 laptop in my room.
Right now the AMD system is really doing nothing
i have a Dell 2.4 / 1g pc1066 for my work system
p4 2.4 @ 2.9 / 9700PRO 1g pc3200 as my gaming system
p4 2.4 / 512 p4s533 as a web server
pIII 933 laptop that does not do much
P 166 / 148mb ram old tecra laptop thatis my dns server.
I figured since i can sell this AMD system for $600 (can be boght new for $400 in the US - might as well sell it - I may also have someone who wants to buy my gaming rig for $1000 :D
If so i figure it is worth it - as i am going ot be buying a $1000 digital camera and my next p[urchase will be a dual opteron or xeon system (pending on how the 3.4 800FSB xeon perform when they come out.
AL Romero, it seems to be unlocked as i dropped the multi down to 11 and had the FSB to 172.
Either way, i am sure i will be selling this AMD system anyways, so will just put the duron in the friend g/f computer - o/c it a little to be stable and off they go!
thnx for the info all - maybe down the road i will mess with another AMD system once all the ddrII and PCIe and such have been out :)

You got yourself a room full there , so id say your pertty set for awhille
and a digital camera will have more use then another computer

:)
exactly - i was almost ready to buy the dual system about a week ago, then had to clam myself down and think
*do ir eally! need it now, no*
So i figure if i can sell both of the systems i want to, then i will go duallie, if i can only sell the AMD system and not my gaming rig, then i wont even bother with the duallie as the gaming will just convert into a multi purpose systsem.
it is hard having $3k and trying not to spend it!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I hear ya onn the cost of stuff in CR. I lived there for 3 years working at a sports book. Ar you the same Mr.G from NWA a while back?

Wrong. Thortons are meant to be like thoroughbred xp's.

^^^ yup and it burns and burns and burns!!
so i figured buy a digital camera - Since i live in costa rica, this country is georgous - just recently bought a bike (mountain bike) so plan to do some biking and photography.
See, not to brag, but this is what sucks about a job that pays for your rent and most expenses - you get money and you spend it on stupid things! by now i could of bought a house!!!
argh!!!
but the one system is sold - amd AMD barton - so there is $600 in my pocket! - now to work on selling my gaming rig!

Holy crap that IS pricy. Does it cost that much to ship to Costa Rica? Why not just get a friend in the US to ship you parts? :p.
Mr.Guvernment
04-09-04, 11:10 PM
Because internatioanl shipping via fedx/ ups or DHl cost a pretty penny
and via regualr mail - it would likely disaapear in customs or get broken on the way
i order something from d-tek customs once - to ship via DHL right to costa rica - my order was $112 - shipping cost $135
:D
so yeah - i have an address in miami i shiup to, but not alot of places will ship to it and also accept international cedit cards.
i am setting up 2 resellers in the US that will do both, but often when we need a new computer here - we need it that day, not 3-10 days later when we order it and the time it takes to ship it.
Myself - for my computers i buy mot everything when i go to canada 3 times a year :D

yeah fr sure - i am now being told that Canon makes the best digital camera's - how ever all the new ones use Sony sensor chips so either Sony, or Canon is the way to go. i figure go big, i can learn how to use it and that way i know it will last me :)

I have a Duron 1.6 running at 2.28 GHz in my file server at home. This computer runs 24/7 and has been running this way for months without any problems. All of this from a $40 chip!!!
Mr.Guvernment

^^ sint it great when you get a good one! and they say you get what you pay for - i guess this does not apply in all cases :D

Ya $40 for a chip that can clock to 2.2Ghz - 2.4ghz , that is a great deal. there realy good if your on a budget. or if your getting ripped off from a rental place.
