View Full Version : Putting a system together, need a spot check on parts.

Ok I finely have all the money set aside and I’m ready to start ordering parts, though the ordering will probably be done in two stages (next check from work is on the 15 and my tax return should be in around the same time). Anyways I wanted to get some feed back before I hit the ‘place order’ button, so here’s what I currently have in mind:

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800PRO 128MB DDR (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268&depa=1&section=1)
DFI LANPARTY NFII ULTRA B (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-138&depa=1)
OCZ Enhanced Latency Serices 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-835&depa=1)
AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2500+ (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-401&depa=1)
ANTEC Mid Tower Case with 350W Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-122&depa=1)
Western Digital Special Edition 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-122&depa=1&section=1)

Total – $780.5 (with an estimated shipping cost)

I’m going to just pick up the extra fan’s and optical drive from a local computer shop, the price differences from getting them local vs. online is outrages and it’s just one less thing to have to worry about shipping for.

Some points of interest on this PC right now to answer any questions you might have are:
1, I’m only going to go with 512MB of RAM right now out of personal choice and for cost reasons.

2, I’m going to go with a Mobile AMD because I want to be able to O\C the CPU and these chips are the best (AMD) platform of which to start on. I’ve been reading where people are pushing these chips up to 2.3 – 2.6GHz on air with a very low vcore and experiencing very high stability.

3, Because my motherboard comes with an on board RAID controller I’ve decided to go take the money I would spend on more RAM (or basically any other RAM option from what I have listed) and put the money towards a 2nd HD.

Thanks for the help guys!

Looks fine - although I don't know how the Antec PS that comes with the case will perform. At worst you may have to get a better one to overclock higher.

^^ That and I'd change out ur RAM. I'd use the fastest stuff available...like PC4000 +. DFI boards clock extremely high on the FSB. I'd make good use of that if I were you

My suggestion:

This Adata stuff apparently kicks ass. Also getting 2x256MB would allow Dual Channel (bandwith + 50%)

I figure I’ll try and keep cost down on the PSU and case right off the bat, there nothing special but being Antec they (hopefully) shouldn’t blow my system up or fry anything. When I switch over to water cooling down the line (3 months minimum) I know I’ll have to upgrade both the case and PSU so right now this setup is just a good deal for the time being. Besides if the case and PSU are in good shape when I upgrade I’ll probably keep them both around for a 2nd system, so the moneys not going to be wasted.

Cooling will be handled by:
(2) 120mm case fans (front and rear)
SP-97 + 80mm fan + AS5 Thermal compound
(2) Home made exhaust fans (top and side, both 80mm)

Also, like i said above, i hope to be water cooling this rig in 3 months.

From all the info I’ve seen for O\C’d AMD mobile chips I should be able to push it to a point where I’m happy with it (2.2 – 2.4Ghz, give or take for stepping) on air alone. One other important factor is the room this rig will be in for daily use (it’s going to be a daily use rig as well as my main system for LAN parties, which are like 2 times a month) has it’s own window cooling unit, 6500 BTU’s I believe and is in shade most of the day, so the ambient temps are pretty cool to start with.
