View Full Version : Which CPU?

I have an Abit BX133-RAID mobo, 2 x 256MB Atlas Presicion PC150 DIMMS (supposed to be really good stuff, I paid $87 a chip while the cheap stuff was going for ~$30), LeadTek GeForce2 Pro 64MB, and 20GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP HD. I am going to buy one of the PIII 1Ghz cpus but am unsure as to which one I should get; 100Mhz FSB or 133Mhz FSB. I have my current Celeron 600 oc'ed to 783 (9x87) with AGP @ 1/1, so I know the video card could handle the 87Mhz with 133 bus cpu. Here's my question. Which do you think I would have the best luck overclocking? The 133 chip will already have the AGP at 87Mhz while the 100 chip will be starting the AGP from 66Mhz. With the 1/4 PCI multiplier, I don't think PCI will be a problem (ex: 155FSB / 4 = 38Mhz, which is acceptable). I guess it comes down to how much the Geforce2 can handle. I also assume that with both chips running at close to the same speed (ex: 110 x 100 = 1100Mhz, 145 x 7.5 = 1100Mhz) the 133 based chip will perform better. Is this right? What are your opinions? Thanks A LOT in advance!

I haven't ever tried a 1 gig P3, but all the other P3s are easier to overclock if they are with 100MHz bus! It gives you a lot more headroom to overclock... however, the 1 gigs aren't exactly good at overclocking - especially not as good as the 600, 650 and 750 MHz are...
In my opinion a high fsb is more important.
I would rather run 1125mhz at 150fsb than 1200mhz at 120fsb.
While getting both is best that motherboard is not the best for trying to get a high fsb.
I would go with the 1 ghz 133 cD0 cpu and you can probably get it to 150fsb before your video card complains and maybe get a different motherboard down the line if your not satisfied with the speed.

Ditto that.
Also, if you can get the cD0 (which is the one I have) chip, you'll be good to go... I've hit a cap with my RAM, but the chip can go much higher.

Nomatter what, it'll all depend on what Videocard you're using! The nVidia TNT(2) and GeForce(2)'s (NOT the Ultra versions!) are known for good stability when using high AGP speeds. My Viper V770 TNT2 is running at 88Mhz. I only had to set AGP 1x, and I slapped a 40mm fan on it just to be sure...

another vote for the 133, you should have no problem with the GF-2 as they are known to be able to handle the high FSB mine has no problems at 171 FSB the best reason to stay with the 133 is the improved bandwidth at higher FSB speeds as long as your 150 ram will work if not then you end up running your ram at minus clock speed to get it to work resulting in lower bandwidth.

Now where can I purchase a CPU and be sure to get the cD0 stepping you guys speak of? Or is this possible? I want to purchase one as soon as possible. Thanks for all the responses!!! :D
edit: My current HSF is the Agilent Arctic Cooler w/ Arctic Silver II (this should be enough for the 1ghz+ also. Also, my video card is being cooled by a Blue Orb chipset cooler with arctic silver II compound, and all 8 ram chips have 100% copper ram sinks held on with arctic silver adhesive. just FYI.

So this is the one I should get?

Why are they listed under "Overclocked Processors"? They arent already oc'ed are they? This is a true 1Ghz chip correct?
Thanks for the link!!
Yes thats the right one.
Its not under overclocked cpu's thou thats the other section if you look close.
