Pentium II 450 cooling I just wanted to know something looking at radio shacks website I see that they had some 486 heatsink fans coolers with a Pelter on it that was rated at 35 watts i think.... Thats not enough to cool my pentium II is it???

No, it is not at all enough.

At 35 watts, you are loking at either a negligible cooling effect, or even worse extra heating. Do not use this, or you will toast your proc.

For PII and PIII's, 70Watt peltiers is minumum

Besides I would have to cut the fins or take the heatsink off with plastic case?

I found this at Radio shack.com it may not be the best heatsink but The Tec haves to be over 70 something watts...... here is a picture

Ready to plug and play with TEC module, heat sink, fan and power connector. Reduces CPU temperatures resulting in longer life and better performance.

I have not seen it in stores if if I can i would just rip the Tec off of it and stick it on my stock heatsink what would you think that would cool better the Radio shack heatsink on the Intel stock one?

Hmm - that fan looks really dinky for a heatsink that is mounted on the hot side of a TEC.

Could you put a link to to the radio shack site? How much is this assembly going for?

If you want just the TEC element, there are some nice 70W chips going for $10 at www.coolerstar.com You would also have to buy a cold plate, as well as come up with a good mounting mechanism (I use a big C-clamp on my slocket) since the tec+heatplate addas about 1/4" to 1/2" off the height of the core, and most heatsink retention clips can't handle that.

Hmmm - doesn't look like a good buy.
I would say get the $10 pelt from coolerstar, scrounge up a cold plate or spend another $5 for that, and then get the best air-cooled heatsink you can find with the remaining money - it should perform a lot better than this.

Just looking at the size of the fan and the design of the heatsink, I have a gut feeling that this will end up being another "Peltier-from-hell" If you really want peltiers, then do it from scratch or buy a quality swiftech or alpha air-cooled peltier hsf combo.

And if you really want cold, water-cooled peltiers is the only solution. A complete water-cooling kit should run you $100, with maybe another $20 for two peltiers. (Make sure your power supply can handle it)

I don't know if a peltier will squeeze out that much more performance from a 450, as the external cache is probably the limiting factor (and peltier cooling those would be a pain)

So it's not a good buy at all.... Well if I just got the Pelt How would i put it on my cpu anyway?

The magic is in the mounting ;)

Basically, I sandwiched the following in order: Thin cardboard, processor, thermal paste, cold plate, thermal paste, peltier, thermal paste, heatsink

And hold it all in place with a 6" C-clamp. Granted, it doesnt provide ideal pressure to the peltier, but it is workable for most situations.

The design could probably be improved if you used arctic silver epoxy for holding the cold plate to the peltier and the peltier to the heatsink. You could clamp down on that real tight until the epoxy set, and then mount that to the processor. I have the heatsink fins going sideways, so I can mount a fan on the side instead of on top. Getting as much airflow over the heatsink as possible is very important - peltiers get real hot real fast, and if you don't cool the hot side, then the cold side starts to get hot, and that is officially a bad thing.

If you don't want the headache, go with a brand name peltier setup (Swiftech or Alpha - one of the ones reviewed in the peltiers section of articles) But it isn't quite as much fun as watching the double-take when people catch a glimpse of a giant clamp in the middle of your case. (Hopefully, the bar will clear the ram slots - mine just barely did)

Umm... a C clamp in my case lol I don't think I want that ...
