Noob question here:
I would like to record TV onto my PC (specifically the Stanley Cup playoffs). I just assemebled a new rig and bought a DVD +/-R/W and want to record some games from TV.

Couple questions:
1. What hardware do I need? I can't get the AIW from ATI b/c I just bought a Radeon 9800 Pro and would like to get just a tuner card.

2. How does the tuner record? I assume it encodes the file onto the hard-disk somewhere, and then you can chuck it onto a DVD-R??
2a. How big are the files, for an hour's worth of recording, for high resolution?

3. How is the encoding on the recording for these TV tuner cards? Does it look digital? Or does it look choppy like someone recorded it on a video camera?

4. The signal is coming in from DirecTV (digitally) and the connection will be via S-Video cable (and 2 RCA's for sound??). Is the sound recording a separate channel from the video recording?

Not really sure how all this stuff interacts, would there be a sticky somewhere for me?

Muchas Gracias!

You could pick up an ATI TV Wonder Pro (http://www.ati.com/products/tvwonderpro/index.html) to complement your ATI video card. It'll capture at 720x480, and look as good as it looks on your TV.

Basically you plug everything into it, set your recording format (ie: MPEG-2 for DVD), and hit record. You'll need some DVD burning software to burn it on a DVD.

I'm not sure how much space it takes, I can test tonight if nobody else comes up with an answer before then.
