View Full Version : Aluminium Cap off a K6-2 ?

I have an AMD K6-2 450 MHz, from a Compaq, and I would like to get better cooling for overclocking. The problem is that the aluminium cap and the HSF are glued up on the CPU. How could I separate them without destroying the CPU ?
Thanks !

I've *HEARD* that you can stick the k6 in a ziploc freezer bag and drop it in the freezer for 10 minutes. When you take it out the glue will be weak and you will be able to pry the cap off of the cpu. That's what I've heard.
But really, you're wasting your time, based on my experience, you'll only be able to push a k62-450 to 550MHz max, if you're lucky. And I don't think it has anything to do with cooling, as much as the limits of the chip design itself.
You can try getting a good cheap hestink like a Coolermaster dp5-6H11 and drop it on with some good thermalpaste. If it can keep a 1GHz tbird running, it should handle any k6-2 overclocking.
Anybody else had any opinions/experiences to contribute?
It would be well worth it for a 100 mhz overclock. Try using a razor blade to pry the cap off.

That cap is actually a heat spreader and its made of silver. I would recommend taking it off and re-applying it with Arctic Silver Epoxy. That should increase thermal transfer by a lot more than what you have it at. But to be honest its not really worth overclocking K6-2s.
I have a 450Mhz K6-2. The highest I can get it is 523Mhz and thats with a heafty SocketA heatsink w/ 60mm 38cfm Delta. Even then I have the voltage at a whopping 2.8v!!! Runs fine, but I run mine at 475Mhz w/ a smaller fan because I already have to cope with a 60mm delta AND a 80mm delta Screamer!!!
Do overclock your K6-2, but dont put too much effort in, you wont get much back.

The cap is not silver. It's aluminum.
I pried one off with a flat head screwdriver. It wasn't easy though. I'd do the freezer trick.

So, after taking it off, would you recommend putting it back ?

I never used my chip. I just took it off of a burned up K62-550 to see what it looked like. Someone here took theirs off and had trouble mounting the HSF back on because of the difference in height to the core without the spreader. Personally, If I were going to OC a K62, I'd remove it.
