View Full Version : Not sure where to post this....
How would I set up my computer to be the Server/Host for my website?
(I'm not really going to do this, I enjoy the fact that I just pay my host & don't worry about downtime on my site)
I just want to know....

"Software and Operting Sytems" should do it":O} I'll redirect, a cool new feature that lets me move your post while maintaing the original link!
You can get some programs such as this one (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10069-100-1896571.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-3.1896571) and just set up your computer's IP to be the address. (ex: http://192.168.0.1). Than if you want people to go to your the site on your computer when they type http://www.compu-geeks.com, than you contact your current web-hosting company, and ask them to redirect the person to your IP. (I may sound not clear, but what it is is when someone types http://www.compu-geeks.com, it goes to http://yourip.)
Hope this helps!
Ok, thanks...now is there anyway to do this without having to pay a company for hosting?
I think Namezero.com will let you do get a domain name. Of couse, all I've been looking for is anybody that will give me unlimited free web space (Having a site that is 110Mb and is STILL unfinished is hard to find space for). I've been thinking about just using the Apache server set up on my comp, but me still run 56K. Darn those dynamic IPs and times when mom and dad need to use the phone....
JigPu
I don't think so, unless you find something like JigPu said.
But for redirecting service you pay MUCH less than for hosting. :)
I signed up for Namezero a long time ago. Registred as flashed-games.com. Right now I don't have my site up, becuase they didn't give it to me, but I'm still receiving ads from them!
EDIT: Here is a site that offers URL redirecting for 49.99 per year. (https://secure.domainit.com/services/redirect.htm) (I'm not recommending it or anything, just an example. I have never dealth with that company before.)
That is way less than what I pay...interesting to know...thanks :)

Compuwife what you will really have to pay for is the bandwidth. If you are on a cable connection with good upload speed it still gets very slow once a few people are there and many companys restrict upload speeds to keep people from hosting site or gameservers and hogging all of the bandwidth. Now if you are on 56k one person would have a hard time getting to your site much less multipule people.
Now a site such as yours would depending on the traffic you generate need a T1 that is 1.5 mbs down and 1.5 mbs up. they are about $4000 to set up and about $1500 a month after that US by the way.
Those were the prices a few years ago when a was in commercial broadband sales. I haven't really kept up as of late and there maybe cheaper ways out there now. But I'm sure that your site gets alot of traffic and any company is going to want to charge you commercial rates.
If you have problems with dynamic addressing, they have something called Always On IP service. I'm not extremely familiar with it, but one product i sell is a streaming video server and the manufacturer of that device offers free AOIP service. Basically the service pings the camera server and repeatedly updates IP address to maintain constant video feeds....or something like that
http://www.websurface.net/ has redirection for $10/year, a friend of mine uses their hosting and redirection and is happy.
It's amazingly easy to set up a server. With a good os (Linux!) and Apache, you can do a html site. If you take some time to learn, you can do a whole lot more.
It's been said, but bandwidth may be a killer here.

Holy Poo!! I'll stick to the plan I have right now...like I said, I'm just curious...right now I pay around $200/yr and don't really plan on commercializing my site...the only advertising I do is for small/specialty vendors & payment comes in form of give away prizes :)
I run my site on Win2K ( NT Server 4.0 until recently) and use a redirection co. to deal with the dynamic ip since I'm on cable.
Setting the pc up is easy as pie!
Cost varies: I pay $35/yr for basic redirection to a sub-domain, which means 3 extra letters in the url and no domain registration!
I like the control of having the site on my local pc, but the bandwidth wouldn't be sufficient if I had a busy site.
I looked at some of the links in previous posts: if I ever get loads of traffic, outside hosting here I come!
