even though I'm not a apple fan

that is still awesome :D

That's awsome for folding publicity. However, towards the end of the article, I started to question him a bit. I was under the impression that the Macs weren't really any good for folding except for the G5, which was mediocre. The way he describes it, the G5 is the best folding processor out there, which I really doubt.
And he didn't mention us anywhere. He HAD to mention OCAU and leave us out :/

Power Mac G5 Performance
“Let’s say you have a 1GHz processor for your Pentium 4 and a 1GHz G5. Obviously the G5 runs faster than that, but they are baselined at 1GHz apiece. Because the software is optimized for the G5, it will get more work done than a Pentium. It actually manages to squeeze more out of the processor on a megahertz-to-megahertz basis.

“Now,” Johnson says, “we can compete with AMD and Intel processors head to head. Since we launched the new core, we’ve seen an increase in points very clearly. Which means we’re handling larger work units more quickly.”

words cannot express my laughter..... http://www.maxvla.com/smiley/laugh.gif

obviously the G5 runs faster than that.. BUT SO DOES THE P4 you mac nut!

now don't forget about hyperthreading... that just tears your lovely G5 to pieces.

Anyone have a G5 to test this out?
I have a Mac nut friend with one...I'll try to get him to fold and email me the log file so we can see.

Don't forget the dual G5!

or the dual xeons
or dual opertons

I bet the cost to performance ratio is pretty bad :p

You know, a Mac WU is OBVIOUSLY worth more than a P4 work unit. If the macsters start a folding team, how will we compete? :D

"Now," Johnson says, "we can compete with AMD and Intel processors head to head. Since we launched the new core, we've seen an increase in points very clearly. Which means we're handling larger work units more quickly."

Hmmm, though I am a MAC fan and a user, it would be nice to ahhhemmm see the actual frame rate of a G5 to any of the AMD's, and Intel's. I need to see statistical proof of the words coming from the mouth or the pen, not just "Because the software is optimized for the G5, it will get more work done than a Pentium. It actually manages to squeeze more out of the processor on a megahertz-to-megahertz basis."

Maybe we need to have this guy go to: Faster frame Contest thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=285011)

or this Most efficient chip thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=284961)

Let him show us his frame rate with these protein and PROVE the G6 is a folding beast. Don't talk da talk, if ya can't walk da walk.

Hooah!

Guys this was not intended to be a MAC bashing thread... I just thought it was cool that Apple is involved and giving FAH press.

Not bashing the MACs, have one now and will add another one soon, just want to see the frame rates of G5's vs AMD's and Intel's.

Like Papsomax, I'm not trying to bash just discuss. Most prebuilt Windows machines would suck for a price to performance ratio (with the exception of that one Dell 2.4C deal that was around awhile ago..I don't know if it still is).
