View Full Version : Folding T-Shirts

EDIT:Ok guys & gals. Looks like we have permission to use both logos. I know someone can make a better design, get crackin' and don't be modest. We're making team 32 Folding@Home T-shirts.
Linksep
Who do I contact here for permission to use the OC.C logo? I want to make some crappy folding t-shirts (I'll part with 'em for cost... my life is booring) I also need to contact Stanford for permission to use the F@H logo.... I already designed 'em and could make one for myself (iorn on inkjet). Seriously, damn the boredom... here's some blurred pictures to protect the innocent (me:D ) Anyone interested? We could do cafepress too assuming proper permissions are recieved... The front of the shirt would be a pic of Dr. Vijay Pande with the words "I'm Dr. Vijay Pande and I support this T-shirt" above and signature below (sorry guys & gals, I've heard one too many political commercials on the AM radio...)

And do the same for the folding website... perhaps leave a message on the folding forum

I already e-mailed Joe and am awaiting a response, If I get the green light I will email Vijay Pande as all the folding pages say (C) Vijay Pande and the shirts may bear his picture and signature (photoshopped off of a folding "Certificate"). I'm sure he could attain the proper permissions from Stanford as well (or may have the power to grant permission on Stanford's behalf as well if needed.)
If I make the shirts I'm estimating cost around $8 (shirt, iorn-on, ink, postage) cafepress is lots more, but the quality would probably be better. It's up to the people...

When I thought of T-shirts the idea of marking them up and using the procedes to buy folding rigs did enter my mind, but I figured better not as there would be people turned off by the idea (I wouldn't trust me ;) )
I also figured there *could* be legal problems as I am not willing to set up a non-profit just to sell 50 crappy T-shirts.
If a super-power-folding-god (Wedo, nikhsub1, Maxvla, PMSfishy, Et. al.) wanted to take over the idea (and the liability) then by all means mark 'em up and have a folding-rig raffle.
Raffle rule ideas: Anyone who has folded over 2.5k pts for #32 is eligble for 1 raffle entry and shirt buyers get 1 entry per shirt (plus 1 entry if they have over 2.5k pts at end of raffle). Make the raffle 90 days to give n00bies (such as my self) a chance to accumulate the points (and stop anyone from crying about how the raffle was not "charitable" because you had to buy something). There could be door prizes too (case fans, other random PC parts, another folding shirt,) maybe some overclockers.com sponsors would jump on board if it got big?
Anyone else have ideas? Want to take it over? I know someone has better photoshop skillz. I am not jumping ship but this thread has not been very active. I want to stay involved and will do whatever (or everything) but maybe if a super-folder-god was in charge (or at least backing me/the idea) it would get more attention.

i would be interested also....would be neat if you could make them on black and white T-****s....long and short sleeve too if theres a demand. i hate white T-shirts...i always seem to get them dirty :p
go with black, looks better i think. if you can do it in black i'd go for it too.

All right guys, if we are going to be serious about this, we need to do a couple poles to find out what the most common sizes, and sleeve lenghts we would want, we'd need an approximate design (for color amount on front and back) will it be full front and full back, or chest logo front and full back, etc.
I have done some researching for prices and such, I guess I can take over the logistics of this as far as my power within the forums will let me.
Something else to concider, we have overhead to deal with. We will need some money to order with. Perhaps we can get a fund going. Or I can get with the mods to get a pot together to get this started. If we all get this going together the shared costs at first will be very little, and we know they will sell ;) so our money will be returned shortly and procedes will start adding up. As far as procedes go. I think we will need to start a business acct or not-for-profit acct. If there are any accountants out there you could help here. If not, again I can investigate.
This is an exellent idea. It will help to spread the word and show what we are about. getting it going may be a bit difficult but lets stick it an make it happen. There are plenty of us with web hosting capability here (myself included) if we wanted to get a small, simple webby up for ordering purposes.
Anyhow. We need to start at the polls
-sizes
-sleeve length
and lets get a good idea of honw many colors we would be dealing with (this can effect costs dramaticly).
PM me with all thoughts and rotton fruit guys. I want to see this happen!:p

I ordered 2 tshirts last time this was done. The design that was used did not work well on black tshirts. We were warned ahead of time but I like to avoid white thirts as well so I got one white and one black anyway. Once you're set on your design you might want to order just one to see how it turns out if thats possible and then go from there. I still have both the white and the black but the black just looks like somebody slipped up in the middle of the process.
this was done before...pics?

i agree and i dont agree. i agree in that a better design would be in order.... on the other hand, im proud that im folding for team 32 and id be glad to show it off. if the design were right, it would look best on black.
btw, in your sig, you can only have links to Folding, SETI, or the 3D mark team and nothing else. see sig rules here (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58341)

Well we are geeks or we wouldn't be at www.Overclockers.com we would be hangin' out at Im-not-a-Geek.com or something. The design I made is a parody of the "My freind went to Hawaii and I got a stupid shirt" shirts and of the "I'm running for president and I like this commercial" commercials that I hear on the AM radio all day. That design is by no means the "end-all be-all F&^* You-if-you-don't-like-it design."
I am just the idea man, I am not a super photoshoper so by all means come up with a better design, but why not tell the world that we get absolutely nothing for spending $100s on dedicated folding rigs (I dont, but some in here do) and extra $ on our electricity bills. I like the idea of the OC logo on top and the F@H logo on bottom but this is not "MY" thing it is "OUR" thing. We could use some people's signatures for tag lines too... "Every Hz you don't fold kills a kitten... Think about the kittens." (MLMIB I know that is not exactly the same, this is the athiest version) or
"Build, Borg, Recruit" (who's is that anyway? I cant seem to find out)
Lan_Of_Malkier when I started the thread I mentioned CafePress and home made for the logistics problems (sizes short or long sleve) ect. If this gets huge I'm sure I can beat anyone's price on them (and I never mentioned it for fear of hassle and mistrust) because my dad owns a company that does TONS of ad specialties (shirts, hats, keychains, mugs, pens, the list goes on for weeks) but in order for him (or anyone else) to make them on the "professional" level it is going to take an exact size, color, style order and the money will have to be paid up front (again, the trust thing)
Come on, people I'm not offended (ever) so submit your OC.c/F@H T-shirt design ideas, and other helpful info. This is an infant idea, it can just be some shirts or it can blow up into a huge raffle & door prizes ect. It's all up to YOU! (By that I mean the collective "you") The more people that are willing to be involved the bigger and better it will be.

Hey linksep have you heard back about logo's an such yet?
Tis better to figure that out before we get too far ahead of ourselves.
IMHO
I think links original idea about a few iron-ons is the best way to handle this right now. We can call them PROTOTYPE shirts. Get an idea of what there gonna look like, how easy or hard to produce,
shirt colors, etc...
That being said, tell me where to send the money.

Ok Ladies and Gentelmen, start your photoshopping engines. If you didn't notice the first post, it looks like we have the green-light on both logos. We first need to submit more design ideas and then gauge interest in #32/F@H T-shirts. After design's have been submited we will work on details (long vs. short sleves, white vs. black, professional vs. iorn-on, sell at cost vs. markup for raffle, ect).
Guidelines:
1) Include (c) Stanford University near the F@H logo.
2) Include (c) www.overclockers.com near the OC.c logo
3) Someone please submit designs for light (white or grey) AND dark (blue or black) shirts.
4) Post your designs here for consideration
5) No bashing people's designs, if you have a suggestion please PM the artist or choose your words very carefully! (except mine in which case bash away)
6) Obtain permission from origional artist if copying someone else's rendition of the Overclockers.com logo (i.e. flaming OC.c logo).
7) PM myself or Lan_Of_Malkier if there is another aspect of this project you want to help with.

Come on people... where are the designs? I whipped the first one up in about 30 minutes and I dont know the first thing about photo editing. If you guys and gals want in on this lest see some action, otherwise I'll just make one (of my original design) and a few for the people that want one despite my severe lack of design $k!llZ.
I'll see if I can come up with something...
P.S. We don't have to use those logos necessarily, right? Are likenesses allowed?
I think a simple-ish design would look best.
I propose the OC logo on the front left chest (small), and something like this big across the back (this is shrunk down a little bit). All this on a white shirt. Perhaps the '32' could be bigger:
linksep
04-24-04, 12:43 PM
Thanks for the reply fletch. I like the logo's myself, but the people will decide (or if only ~5 people really want shirts I guess everyone could have their own design.)
Yeah, I think the OC logo, or a variation would look good on the front left chest of the shirt. I definitely think both logos should be on there though.

I really like this idea. It's another way to show your team spirit. It will have the added benefit of increasing awareness of the importance of FAH - those around you are bound to ask questions about the T-shirts. So I hope this goes through. BTW, I personally like the Team 32 logo from the EMIII skin, like the avatar I'm using.

Well I asked for some help in the design department, and only got one response... any one else care to throw togeather a quick design? I still intend to follow through and at least make one for myself, a pre-production unit if you will (I will post pics when done).
I however have been extremely busy lately and today I got word that my dog probably has cancer (the vet is 75% sure). This news is devistating to my mom who in less than a month has had her boyfriend get diagnosed with cancer, one of her best friends was diagnosed with MS, and my dog (that lives with my mom) has cancer (and will probably be put down this weekend if more tests prove that is the case). So it may be a while yet before I get around to making some shirts.

Huh? AFAIK, I have "blanket permission" from stanford and Overclockers.com to use logos if there is a (c) notice on/near the copyrighted images and they are used for promotion of team 32(assuming there is no person proffiting even $1 from it). If there are any other images you want to use obtain permission from the copyright holder and FWD permissions to me so I can archive all permissions to use copyrighted materials (i.e. if there was ever a question about permission to use an image I would have a copy of it, not I have permission from OC.c and stanford, scary-penguin has permission from ???, other OCForums-user has permission from EM-III, ect.) That way we couldn't run into a situation where we are searching for the person who obtained permission and no body can remember who got permission from what person/company/orginization.

I love that design penguin, but its got a little too much IMHO. Maybe take a few things off like those things on the sleeves?.
If you send the design I can actually get these made as my friends father makes T-shirts an has a heatpress, etc. as a sort of extra-on the side job and sell them on ebay.

Okay, I currently have three issues that need addressing in the forum.
1) I really like the stanford F@H logo on the sleeves but I do understand that it would be hard to do, I personally think that it gives the shirt a bit more character than just an every-day blah t-shirt. If you all can think of a better place to put the logo, please let me know, as I think we do want to pay credit where its due to the University.
2) The coloring of the shirt: Most of these are dark colors, I do not know for sure but I beleive that most dark colors need a white undercoat on a black shirt to show up, any of you familiar with screenprinting or heatpressing T-Shirts please let me know. Heatpressed ink usually is more durable, IMO, and has a more sturdy feel and professional look.
3) It has been asked by the mods that WWW.OVERCLOCKERS.COM not be included with OCFORUMS.COM as they are now owned by two seperate people. I am seeking permission here to include them together, or taking suggestions as I would like to pay homage(sp?) to both, as they are the heart of our community here.
Thank you to Captain Slug for some nice high-res images of the OCForums Design that he made for the logo contest a while back that I am using for the front.
I will begin work on a white design today.

On shirt color, since white gets dirty & messed up too easily, and black might not work well with many logo designs, you might consider flannel gray. I have a T-shirt from a friend's tatoo shop that is done on a Hanes "Heavyweight 50/50" flannel gray shirt that's loaded with bright colors that stand out well against the flannel gray... and has withstood 5 years of wear, dirt, grime, laundering & motorcycle riding and still looks pretty good to this day. A white T-Shirt would've been long since become too dull and stained under the same treatment.

I'm alive and well (but busy as h***). I need to know how many people ARE GOING TO BUY... I really have no spare $$$ to produce anything that is not already spoken for and need to know how people want their shirts. The origional idea was that I was going to make a few iorn-on/inkjet shirts. If people are opposed to that and want professional 4-color printed shirts I will get price details. This is a team effort and there are still logistics to work out.... I will post a new thread asking for size/color/quanity/design details.

So long as they are washed and cared for correctly, the heatpressed transfers will have a better image quality over screenprinting since screenprinting does not allow for super fine detail and shading.
