Whats the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

Ive read about DVD burners and i see DVD-R and DVD+R and some others ( i cant remember) and im just curious as to what the differnce is....im not planning on getting a burner until the dual layer ones come out next year, but just to know, what does that all mean?
