When I logon to my account on win. xp, it is like windows messenger is on, except there is no icon on the taskbar. When I check, the process msmsgs.exe is running. This is the old windows messenger, default with win xp. I installed the new msn 6.1 and it did not replace this old one, that still invisibly starts up. I tried msconfig to turn it off, but it wasn't there. What can i do to turn this nuisance off?

In task manager "end process" for the msmgs.exe process. THen go to your program files folder, find the messenger folder, and rename it "MessengerOFF" or any name except "Messenger" and it will disable it from starting.

If you have admin privileges to the computer your talking about you can completely remove the windows messenger from your system. In add/remove programs then go to add/remove windows components and uncheck windows messenger. That should stop the program from starting with windows.

right on thanks guys
Sometimes the ADD/REMOVE Windows Components doesnt really remove Windows Messenger even with SP1x. To make sure you completely remove it go to C:\WINDOWS\inf & open the SYSOC.INF & look for the line msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 now edit it to reflect msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7. Now you will see an extra component in the ADD/REMOVE Windows Components that will allow you to completely remove the offending application & not have anyerrors/warnings/pop-ups when you open OE.
While your at it might as well disable the Messenger Service by right clicking MY COMPUTER | MANAGE | SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS | SERVICES then disable the Messenger Service.
