How do you make a DOS based game run on WinME. I have some old games and some of them go to a virtual dos screen and work fine.
But I've got a reeeally old one, Flight Sim 5.1 and it dosen't work at all.
Why would some work and some not?

Because WinME doesn't fully support DOS like 95/98. That was the entire reason of being for WinME...getting rid of DOS.

Yeah, but some others play fine in dos or Virtual Dos I guess...
No big deal, I just need Win98.
Does anyone know if XP has MS-Dos mode?

Did you try making a .pif file to start it. I haven't played a dos game in years, and not even sure if you can still do .pif files in 98/ME. But...it comes to mind, so. :)

XP is based on Win2K which only has a DOS emulator, the "Command Prompt" it's called.

You'd have more support under ME, so you'll have to go for 98.

what about (for 2k) setting up an aplication compatability layer? wouldnt that work in 98?

Where I work (small auto garage) the manager has a program for the billing that runs under DOS. He just (finally) upgraded PC's recently, and the new rig comes w/ WinME.

The DOS billing program and ME really don't co-exist peacefully.... lol

ME and DOS do not make good bed fellows, if you will. =)

Win98 is a lot cheaper than Win2000, if you're only looking for running that game. But, Win2000 is a lot more stable, but isn't the greatest for gaming.

I'd lean towards stepping back to Win98 myself in this instance.

since we are on the subject of DOS and games.....i recently found Privateer 2. I have always wanted it and found it at a computer show.....it required DOS to play,,,well i had to get rid of ME and install 98 and now i can play it....well after i beat it i decided to play the orginal privateer( which requires DOS ). so i installed it,it said the instalation was succesfull. So I go to play it and it says not enough DOS memory to run the game.....is there a way i can play it or am i just SOL.

You guys are forgetting one thing Me has the same kernal as 98 and this being the case dos can be hacked back in if you choose to do so, all of this info can be found at www.techtv.com you'll have to look around a bit but its definatly in there. As far as your older games not running on dos even though some do the problem is your system is to fast for them [well maybe not all of them] there are programs that do slow your PC down enough so that they can work, ive seen these programs at the same website above you may have to do a search on that though i have not been there in a long time [since ive been coming here :)]

There was another post, I think in Software, that has a zip file to dowload to modify the autoexec and config to allow dos mode. Has anyone used that?

Yea I was responsible for that very post which can be found Here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=29580) I use it as it allows DOS software to run on WinME that did not previously.. however I did not write the patch myself and as such take no responsibility for it as stated in the post on that topic :)

Yeah, that's it.
I know you didn't write it but did you have any problems with it?

I had no problems with it at all, it works great, WinME takes a little longer to load though which is a downside as it now has to load the autoexec and other stuff but I can live with that
