UPDATE: DON'T CHANGE THE SERVERIP FILE; YOU WILL LOSE CREDIT FOR THE UNIT!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I just used the good old trick with changing the first letter in the serverip file, but on this update the unit it uploaded was not credited at all... And yes, I did return it within the time limit.
Have any of you actually checked to make sure that you recieve credit for a unit, when you have changed this letter?
To those who do not no this, changing the serverip file will allow you to connect to another stanford server, if the current one is down.
Perhaps its just a stats error, or perhaps we do not recieve credit for units, when we change the letter in the serverip file... and if so, it would be good to know, so we could STOP suggesting it.
All input is appreciated.
Thanks!

I stopped doing that because of the exact reason you mentioned. If Allan is right, we lose a lot of credit everytime this happens. I thought it was a random thing for a while but it sounds like it may always happen? Also...it never seemed to work for me.
I would recheck the file..the changed letter was there but it seemed to never pick up a new unit and the letter would revert back to the original server...probably had to do w/ multiple servers being down at one time. Oh well..I just let 'em sit now and get a little breather. Also..some of the new proteins are killers...stinks when you loose 5pts. for a long unit.
I checked. You don't get credit for sending it to another server. Here is a link to the explanation

This post looks like it should stay up top for a while so everyone has a chance to read it. I have never used this trick but I had considered it on several occasions. I'm glad I didn't.
I know I have read on several occasions about people doing this so we have lost some w/u's to our credit and the project has lost as well. I'm glad you guys figured it out.
Back to the top with ya! BUMP

You don't have to change it back, you just need to return your wu's to the server you got them from.

Jesus well what are we to do hold the frigging Wu's and let them just time out while they learn which way is up and which way is down on their servers? We only have three days at most to do a wu and for the people that it takes two days to do a WU that would suck to spend all that time crunching and not get credit for it.
i guess we need to have 2 clients per box then

Ok here's the deal, I have some boxes that I had made the serverip file "read only" on and they are going fine. Now the big question is would this prevent you from getting credit for the work?

I don't think testing this would help much. Vijay Pande himself says that you won't get credit if you change the server number... Sorry Dave. Good idea though.

You missed the whole point allen. change it, loose the work once and make it read only so it stays on something other than "e" after the first time I don't think you will loose work. ;)

Oooh yeah, sorry about that Dave. Now I understand what you mean.
Who wishes to lose a unit or two on such a project? You would be helping out, and recieve our gratitude! :) Thats about all we can offer!

I'd do it but I have to run them one at a time on this machine it would take too long to see if it worked or not

It probably should be a high end AMD computer doing the work, as it would not take much time, and it would be back folding normally a bit sooner.

Never mind I figured out a way to do it. I took a 1300 TBird, mater of fact this machine right here, and deleted client.cfg on two clients, one locked on "c" and one locked on "d". I left the third one which was on "e" not running. For a userid I put in
Serveriptest_c (www.overclockers.com) and
Serveriptest_d (www.overclockers.com)
So keep an eye out for them. I think you loose the work only the first time you change it. Right now "c" has 17 remaining and "d" has 91 remaining. Well it's saturday and you know what that means "Marketpro" see ya later.

Great idea. I'll be watching the stats then...
Hello to all! I fold for DSL Reports Team Helix and I stopped by your forum and this thread caught my eye. The data in the serverip.dat file represents the address of the server that issued the current work unit and the address is coded in reverse. If you open the file with a hex editor, you would find that cz@<< equates to hex 63 7A 40 AB and this equates to decimal 099 122 064 171, or server 171.64.122.99. As someone stated that they changed the first character in the string to a 'd', that would equate to server 171.64.122.100 and I don't believe that server .100 is currently participating in the assignment pool. Even though the file attributes have been changed to read only, I believe if you check the log for the client that has been changed to 'd', you will probably find that .99 issued the unit. If the unit is in fact returned to .100, you will not get credit for it.

Thanks for the info howieh. I just changed it to "c" in light of your info. We will see what happens

What log are you talking about? I can't find any log. While you are here why don't you come over to (www.overclockers.com) Team? We have brand new forum setup and everything.
Just kidding, I am sure you are loyal to your team.
