I just recently bought a 1 ghz pIII laptop. it has a tendency to freeze up when it over heats. what's a good way to keep this think cooled down?

OK very nice.

now does anyone have any helpful advice?

what i'm thinking about is getting one of those silicone gell pads, running a plastic line thru it, like a radiator, and running water thru that.

of course i would place the laptop on top of the silicone pad.

what do you fellas think.

or does no one here use a lap top?

I assume the laptop is fairly new, especially if it is 1 GHz. That means it should still be under manufacturer warranty.

There is no reason for the latop to be overheating (unless it is a duron laptop that you O/C'd) With the amount of money you spent on it, the least they could send you is a working product.

I know that a 1GHz proc (or any high speed proc for that matter) has serious thermal issues (especially in such a restricted area like a laptop), but that is somethign for the laptop manufacturer's engineers to worry about - not you. You paid for a laptop that should run at 1GHz, so if it doesn't start complaining (as long as you are under warranty)

(This is why I love my PII-266 laptop - I can run it at 100% for days without worrying)

If there is some pressing reason why you cannot get any manufacturer service on it:

The gel pad would be good, except if the comp is freezing due to temperature, it is probably more directly related to processor temperature, and even a large cooling of the base would probably have little effect on cooling the area immediatly near the processor.

I remember seeing somewhere a fan/blower designed to fit into 2 PCMCIA slots and effectively provided better airflow (which could help cooling a lot). If you can't find where to buy a professionally made one, I could throw together some schematics for a quick, homemade version.

if Im correct a new laptop should be using a heat pipe. So there should be some form of HSF on the back of you laptop. I would see if there is some whay to get a bigger fan on it.

I would also go to the manufacturer first.

i've been trying the manufacturer

first they wasted my time by insisting that i re image my machine. then i had to do the msconfig and do a selective startup, now they want me to take it to an authorized dealer. this really stinks. i may just return this machine. it's less than 3 weeks old btw.

You've seen the Simpsons? 2 words- Speed Holes.

Seriously I would return it for a new model. Laptops have a lot more thought put in their design than home PCs, cuz they're so small. They don't always do a good job of it. I'v heard that some models just do that.

Ok, try a new one of the same model 1st but if it even gets hot I'd swap it for another model or brand.

R u able to actually see a fan running on the laptop? is there one installed, check that it's working, and just take it back to the manafacturer! best advice. Those little fans on laptop do bugger all! they just make an annoying noise

Now that's a challenge :) I'll look into it with my notebook. I think that on a DeLL notebook watercooling is possible

Just return it and get another brand or model. Laptops cost way too much money. If there is any problem with it after you buy one then take it back right away. There's no point in going through the hassle of dealing with the manufacturer and such considering how much you spent on it. Go get a new one and, if that one gives you any trouble return it too. Keep doing that until you get one that you like and gives you no trouble.

Once you get one that works like it should I'd still look into the Tiger Direct catalouge and think about one of those pc slot coolers. Even if it isn't producing alot of extra heat or overheating. It will help extend the life of your investment in the long run.

Good luck with it =]

The cooler in question used to be available at www.coolerguys.com. It was a tube you plug into your PCMCIA expantion port, and it has an angled fan on it.

If you mail them, you might be able ti find out why they stopped selling it, and where to find one again.

well

thx to all the posters btw.

anyway, the problem is the fan. sometimes it won't come on. :(

i've talked to toshiba tech support 3 times and now they are suggesting i take it to an authorized service center. :(

i'm trying to decide whether i should keep this machine, it's a satellite 2805 w/ everything.

or return it and buy something else. i shouldn't have any problems returning it. i paid a total of like $2500, including a 400 dollar extended warranty. i know, i know.

anyway, i'll fill you guys in on what happens.

Return the damn thing, and build yourself one of those briefcase computers you see all over the case galleries of mod sites.

Portable, easy to make, and if you know electronics, you can include a laptop display under the lid of the case for an allinclusive package. Plus, it looks damn cool!

Very Mission Impossible-ish (the old series)! Wonder if it has its own battery or monitor? Didn't spot any.
