My goal is to overclock a 3.2GHz P4 Northwood to 3.4GHz. I know, it's not ambitious at all. Basically I want a 3.4GHz cpu and I don't want to pay the extra $200 for it. Secondly, this unit needs to be rock solid stable because I'm custom building it for my dad, and he doesn't need any trouble. So if you would, please just review my plan and tell me if you think it's viable.
The 3.2GHz P4 has a 16x clock multiplier (200 x 16 = 3200), and I am assuming that the cpu is locked, so I cannot change this.
3400 / 16 = 212.5. Let's say we round that to 215. I like round numbers. So I want my FSB to run at 215MHz (or 430MHz in DDR speak). So to do this, I either need DDR433 (PC3500) or DDR466 (PC3700) or obviously anything higher, but that gets excessive.
But if I buy PC3500 it usually comes with a Latency Rating of 3, overall timings like 3-4-4-8 or something similar. PC3700 will also have 3-4-4-8, but if I "underclock" the PC3700 from 466 down to 430MHz, I should be able to increase the timings to 2-3-3-6, correct?
So I want to run a P4 3.2C GHz @ 3440 (16 x 215MHz) using Corsair XMS PC3700 RAM (1gig) with factory timings of 3-4-4-8 increased to 2-3-36. Will this work? Hell, is it a good idea? Do you have a better idea?
