If the 2500+ is old, then hopefully you have a good barton that can hit 2.4ghz. We won't know unless you post the stepping of your chip (the numbers on the black label).

If it's a rotten chip, or newer (week 39 2003 or newer), I recommend a mobile-2500. Those things OC like CrAzY.

As far as WC'ing goes:

D-tek WW
Chevette Heater Core
Danner Mag 3
10ft 1/2ID, 3/4OD, 1/8in wall Clearflex 60
Hose Clamps

okay im ordering this processor n stuff tommorow can you tell me exactly what processor to get? and is there a perfomance loss at all with going to the athlon mobile i seen theres an athlon mp and an athlon xp mobile which one should i get? any other help would be greatly apprciated so far im looking at this setup

lian li case
MSI K7N2 Delta ilsr
1 gig DDR 333 Corsair
Samsung 120 gig SATA x2 (gonna raid)
DVD burner oem (80 bucks!)
ill spend more money on a processor if theres a better overclockable one then the 2500, i ust heard it was insanly easy to overclock.

i been looking at the thermaltake aquarius II is it any good?

i was also reading this overclocking magazine and they showed a little plastic clip thing that you put on barton processors to unlock them, is this somethign i should be getting?

i just noticed the athlon xp mobiles are only 266 front side bus? that will slow down my overclcoking wont it?

im up for any suggestions greatly appriciated guys.

You want to get the 2500 mobile barton core cpu. The MP is for smp rigs and is not what you want. The mobile gives you plenty of core setting controls to get the sweet overclocks people have been getting with these chips.

Forget the name thermaltake if you want to get a good overclock. Get the hardware that cyrix recommended - buy parts yourself, not in a kit. I would just get a dtek heatercore, they are virtually the same as chevette heatercores and they come ready to be used.

I don't know how good of an overclocker your motherboard choice is. Do you know how high of an FSB your RAM can run? It is only rated for 166mhz FSB, but how high does it go with 2.8 volts? You will want to look around and find some ram that can run at high FSB for a good price. Find something with CH5 chips.

The 2500 mobile is the best overclocker you can get right now. It doesn't matter what the FSB rating is for the chip... The fact is that people have been able to take these chips well over 200mhz FSB. You don't need any clips like you mentioned.

(You keep referencing the DDR frequency, and not the actual FSB frequency which is half as much.)

Welcome to the forums!

2500 Mobile barton is your friend. And with regards to watercooling, remember it will always be cheaper to build your own setup; you will get more performance and 'joy' out of it. You will just have to spend a good few hours researching things. For research, you have come to the right place :)

For a good overclocking mobo go with either the Abit NF7-S or DFI Ultra Infinity.

This is the CPU you want:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-401&depa=1

Most people choose this motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-166&depa=1

Or this one I think:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-138&depa=1

That corsair will do alright, but you are going to pay for every ounce of performance you get... There are better deals out there but I'm not sure what they are right now.

Unless I'm mistaken... Over 2500mhz in many cases... They run at 1.83 stock for 2500+ ratings.

http://www.dtekcustoms.com should have all the WC'ing stuff. The DFI board kicks ass, and the Corsair memmory does as well. However, get better Corsair memmory. DDR333 doesn't cut it nowdays. You want atleast PC4000. For the proc, the mobile barton is a pretty sweet OC'er unless you're unlucky.

My advice, Ditch the Lian-Li case as they're highly over-rated and get better memmory. My Skyhawk aluminum case was $30 and is VERY sturdy. Just as good as any Lian-Li case...

BTW, you should run 250mhz FSB on the DFI.

Yeah, don't get the standard Bartons. My friend just got his and was ******ED when he found they started locking them. I have another friend that ordered his about 6 months ago and it was unlocked, so I guess he got pretty lucky. It didn't matter too much, he just upped his FSB to 210 and he is running stable at a decent temp. Definately go Mobile Barton if you want to OC. The Asus nforce2 boards OC nicely as well, but not to the teeth that you might want, plus you'll pay for the Asus name.. I always do.:D

Ok, ditch the Nexus controller. I had one and it completely died when I hooked my 120's up to it.

Video card looks good.
The Raptor's would kick ass if you got them...
Ram's looking good, but I would go faster still...
What PSU are you getting?
Everything else looks good

Don't skimp on the PSU... sparkle psus can be had for pretty cheap and they are of good quality. You can get a 530 watt sparkle for under $70 or a lesser wattage one for a little less money. The quality of the PSU will factor into your overclock.

Don't forget, a bad PSU can cause instability and kill your new system, so get a good one. I second the Sparkle/Fortron suggestion.

sounds good ill ditch the controller, what brand power supply should i get?

if i could spend less on my ram i would like too but what brands are badass and ddr400? for less or equal? again thanks for your guys's imput

Fortron/Sparkle and Antec both make great power supplies. As does PC Power and Cooling but theyre kinda on the expensive side. Theyre all definitely worth the extra money over a cheap generic one though.

For ram I personally use Corsair, but I hear the Mushkin Black Level 2 is kick ass, but that's more expensive... Hmm, Kingston HyperX is good stuff, and Giel's not too bad... For the PSU, go with what everyone's said so far, they're all good. As far the fan contoller goes, If you want one, get the Sunbeam Rheobus. I own one and it kicks ass. It can handle up to 20w of stuff per channel!

get a better vid card, and 256mb vic cards dont relly outperform 128mb ones. 5900xts or non ultras can be had for <200. thats a great buy in my opinion, and with the 6800s soon to be released, nvidia is charging their manufacturers 10-20% less, making current video cards even cheaper. imagine a 5900 for 150!

yeah i had that sunbeam silver one on my lian li! it worked great. now heres another question for you i got a stick of 512 meg DDR333 corsair value select memory, if iwere to just buy a matching stick would it work okay when i overclock? i can buy some heatsinks for them if need be.

04-18-04, 10:26 PM
well, the answer's "Sorta". It's too slow to run in sync, but it could be used. You would take an ENORMOUS performance hit though. The ultra infinity B's been known to hit 270mhz+ FSB speed and that value ram can only do 166mhz.

okay so its pretty important to get duel channel ddr 400 then eh?

now to find the cheapest yet most reliable for what im gonna be doing ram.

i noticed theres a couple diff things, one thing i noticed was there is CMX512-4400 i want to spend like 150 on my memory what is my best bet. this and 4000, then theres duel channel if i get one stick of 4400 would it be better then 2 sticks of 256 duel channel?

blah im so confused on this memory thing i want to be able to overclock my processor and whole bus architechure to the max but i dont wanna spend 300 bucks whats my best bet?

OCZ PC-4000 Dual-Channel Gold Edition 512M OCZ500512ELDCGE-K

is that good ram its only 180$ its duel channel and you can overclock without voiding warrenty lemme know tks.

OCZ PC-4000EL Dual Channel 512M OCZ500512ELDC-K is only 150$

http://www20.tomshardware.com/firstlook/20040105/ hm its getting pretty good reviews from toms hardware.

Cyrix_2k
04-19-04, 05:36 AM
OCZ makes some pretty nice stuff.

No, 1 stick of 4400 is NOT better than DUAL 4000. To get the thouroghput of dual channel, take memmory speed (4000mb/s) and multiple by 1.2 (120%). So DUAL 4000 is equal to a SINGLE 4800.

Also, check the CAS rating. The lower the better.
