my friend asked me to build him a pc since he saw mine and i said sure so he asked his parents and they approved of letting him spend 800$ with shipping and taxes this is canadian.

he wants to download movies and convert them, not as much play games so here is what i have.

amd barton 2500 retail
soltek 75FRN2-L mobo
samsung 512meg ddr pc3200
wd cavalier 80gig hdd ata
liteon 451S dvd +- rw
antec slk2600amb case 300watt psu
sapphire radeon 9600SE 128meg 8x agp

total price for all this was 779.66$ CANADIAN with shipping and taxes.
tell me what do u guys think of that setup

if he want to convert film i think he should gowith 1)a64 2)intel 3)amd

i reall suggest to get an amd mobile 2500 and overclock it at 2500mhz it will slitly match the 3.2 intel and A64 in decoding and codding
mobo good one like abit nf7-s or dfi utra infinity(if looking for 240+ fsb)
some good power supply such forton, antec(400w at least)
9800 refre

he dont want to speed over 800$ lol makaka

but i would go with a mobile barton 2500+ and overclock it
find him a cheap Ti4200
also get a maxtor H/D a fast ome ATA 133 7200rpm
the ram and everything else look good maybe a better psu

im gonna get this at www.ncix.com, they dont have any ti4200's, the hdd is a
western digital 80GB INT ATA/100 HD 3.5LP 9MS 8MB 7200RPM OEM

If he wants to convert movies, he'll need gobs of disk space and likely could use a DVD-RW.

he doesnt like the scorpio case he says its too fancy for him lol, let where do u see that mobile 2400?? let me do it with the discounts i can get.
also thats not with shipping and taxes 798$

main reason why I got that case b/c off the bigger watt PSU for OCing. The cpu is oem and have to buy good heatsink to OC easily. The motherboard is more OC friendly and may last longer than the soltek due to reputation.

get him athlonxp3200
asus a7n8x delux
3 gb ocz pc4000
some raptors, raided...
cold fustion nuclear power for the psu (u can get a home kit!)

u didnt read the hole topic have u??? i said he doesnt want to spend more than 800$, ppl these days dont finish reading stuff before opening their mouth

Why are you guys downplaying the 75frn? Thats a really really good motherboard.

Anyways, try to get a bit of a better video card. Even a radeon 8500 or 9100 would work. Spend the extra $20 cn for a better video card.

Actually make sure you subscribe to the ncix.com mailing list cause they usually have some really good deals on pretty much everything, and they always have the mobile 2500+ for pretty cheap. Either do that or pricematch EVERYTHING.

And as long as you don't need SATA or firewire, the Soltek board is an awesome deal. I've had no problems with it whatsoever, unlike my ABIT board.

Also I have no idea why so many of you like Maxtor harddrives. In my experiences they're the most unreliable pieces of crap ever. For example in one of the computer labs in my university, they decided to buy a whole bunch of new computers...all with Maxtors in them...that was about a half year to a year ago and right now I would say that about half of them have primary hard disk fails.

I'm pretty sure he did finish reading the thread...and I'm also pretty sure he was joking...seeing as how he suggested getting a home kit for COLD FUSION NUCLEAR POWER.

LoL I think you should be the one reading entire posts
