Server, ftp Best way to share files. safely

Im a total noob with networking. I just recently set up my Crossover/2PC network. Im trying to figure out HOW? and IF? I can grant a friend permission to pull files from my shared drive over the internet (not part of my network). Do i need to be running some sort of server? Possibly I just need an FTP software running at all times? Im looking for full time hosting.

If you are talking about using windows file sharing, don't. It is very insecure, and the target of many viruses.

You could run FTP server software, like
http://www.bpftpserver.com/
http://www.serv-u.com/
or any number of other ones, and have users connect to it using FTP Clients.

Yes, u just need to run an FTP server on your PC. I like to use BulletProof ftp server, but there are others out there.
