View Full Version : Celerons 66fsb or 100fsb Upgrading

Hello,
I'm in the market to upgrade my system and for my cpu I am stuck with chose between a celeron 733 for about $50-60 or just spending $90 on a new 100fsb celerons. They will be overclocked with a golden-orb and abit slocket. If anyone knows about the celeron 900 and overclocking that will be helpful.
current system;
acorp via pro133 mainboard
awill scsi controller
celeron 433@540 default voltage
2.5gb ide and 4gb scsi hdds
radeon ve 32drr video
64 meg pc100
sony spressa scsi 8-4-32
awill scsi controller
Windows NT dual booted with 98
upgrades i am going to buy;
celeron ???@1??? $60-90
18gb 10k seagate cheetah ultra wide scsi hdd- $100 (very cheap for scsi hdd)
256 pc 133 - $40-50
any suggestions will be helpful im still in high school and need to save money but still get optimal performance. The computer will basicly be used to learn networking and light game play.
i got a celeron 800 that went to 1066 at default voltage, 1.75 for total stability.
best Celeron bang-for-buck is the 566 or 600 mhz models. $45 or so dependinbg on retailer- TCWO (http://www.tcwo.com) . They overclock to 100 FSB with little effort, and usually higher.
I would skip both the 733 and 900 models, as a 600 is cheaper and can be overclocked to a higher performing speed, i.e high core speed AND high FSB speed.

but the 800 celerons are actually pretty nice

I have to agree, the 800's are prety nice.
I have one runnin at 1066Mhz at 133FSB. Nice and stable.
An 800 will knock the socks off a 600 or a 633 at 1gig just because of the higher FSB.

Hi satan,
the C2 900 theorically seems to be really interesting, coz rising Fsb to 133Mhz you got a nice 1.2Ghz!
If I remember well I saw an article about this chip OCed on a Japanese web site linked in a Post to the Intel Cpu forum, try to make a search, if interested.
I hope it helps you :-)
There's a lot of people getting really good results with the new 100FSB Celerons.
There has been just as many, if not more, getting bad results with the high multiplier 66 MHz Celerons (633, 667, 700, 733, 766). I'd avoid any of these if you plan on overclocking them. The reasoning being the very high multiplier that intel has them set at. A high multi can actually work against you, after a certain point is reached. Generally speaking, the 566 and 600 are the best of the 66MHz default lot.
Those 100FSB Celerons are really intrigueing me, though. I've read too many posts of people getting 1.05GHz or more with them to discredit them anymore. I'm really curious to see how well the 900E Celeron overclocks, as it has the same 9x multiplier as the 600, which is usually considered the best bang for the buck Celeron made.
I'm starting to think that either intel has internally revised the Celerons somehow, or their using P/// chips with bad cache for them for these new 100 FSB chips.
A P/// at the same clock speed should still outperform it, though, with the superior L2 cache it has. They're just a lot more $$.... =)
A couple point of interest regarding your choice of hsf, and slotket. The orb isn't going to be able to sufficiently cool that Celeron at that speed, I'd consider an Alpha PEP66T. It's designed for slotket applications, and cools extremely well, even with a 27cfm YS Tech fan. Also, a lot of people have had problems, stability wise with those Abit !!! slotkets. They've also noted faster overclocks simply by switching brands. Some things to consider, while you decide on what chip to get......

I'm gonna buy me a Celeron 850 in about half an hour (when I'm done working). I already purchased a Thermright SK-6 (wanted to buy a 1GHz first) and ASII. Also bought a Corsair PC150MHz CAS2 256MB DIMM. Hopefully I will be able to reach at least 1200MHz.
Maybe I'll stick my 52W Peltier under it :-) but first see how the SK-6 handles it.
150 * 8.5 would be great! 1275MHz. Maybe a bit too much, but who knows. I will post in the forum here about my tests.

I was going to buy a 600 at first but the 900 seamed like a fun project and 9x133=1200. So if I get it to 1200 it'll be worth it for $90 and the fsb will definatly speed up my ram and video.
I also am going to need a new case soon. I have a case with 250w power supply and need one that will have good working room and power for scsi drives. Anyone know places to get cheap cases. I am concidering a alienware hydrolic tower case.
Also what are good slocket fans that don't take up dimm slots from the size. I thought the orbs were top notch but i quess not.
Thanks Much.
ps. the guy that is buying a 850, can you please reply your results
I had no I idea the 100FSB celerons would clock so high!! Are they using a new stepping on them , or what? My 566 is a cCo, 1.7V part, and it cries like a little girl at 1 gig. I'd love a 1.2 gig 133FSB celeron.
Heh, sounds like a Tualatin!
I noticed your memory is PC100. Getting a Celeron that's already at 100 FSB and overclocking it may pose quite a problem if that stuff doesn't overclock well. Might want to invest in some PC133 while prices are rock bottom...
Oops...noticed that was in your list of upgrades at the bottom there. Nevermind me then and good luck with whatever you decide on!
I just bought and assembled the 800 celery on a Soyo board. It runs great stock, and i had it over a gig, but clocked it back down till i get a new hsf. The orb just doesnt cut it for that high of an OC. Stock it outperforms the Celeron 1 OC'ed big time. So good luck and i would definately recommend the Celeron 100fsb chips.

Well, got the 850 ysterday. running at 1133MHz right now (133FSB) at default VCore !!!
since I have a CUSL2 I think I will do the voltage mod.
It POST's at 1200 easily, but need more voltage to load W2K.

Great results, epecially @stock voltage, very impressive!
freshy98
08-11-01, 05:08 AM
well, forget the stock voltage. had to up to 1.8V (didn't try 1.75V though). runs better now.
The Doors
08-11-01, 05:18 AM
Well it's still a Great OC, I suppose that now is rock stable with 1.8v.
Probably is my next way, if i don't go with a TB, but I prefer to got a C2 900 and wait untill the prices drop a little ;-)

08-11-01, 05:29 AM
900's are very hard to get here in holland.
btw: my 850 is even a CC0, not a CD0 :-)
highest in CPU dbase is still 1133..going to beat that!!! :D
The Doors
08-11-01, 05:37 AM
Also in Italy, don't worry, but I suppose that we'll found the C2 900 on the market in the middle of september (I'm an end-user reseller).
Good luck for your Guiness :-) but don't go to the extreme! you don't want a fried chip ;-)
freshy98
08-11-01, 05:46 AM
There are already about 3 end uder resellers here in Holland who say they sell them, but I didn't wan't to order one.
I will not fry my CPU (I hope not) just like to reach 1200 :-)
Cooling is now done with a 52W Peltier and a Global Win FKP32.
Gonna change to a SK-6 beginning of next week as soon as I have my spacer.
First gonna try without a Peltier, and maybe later with.
The Doors
08-11-01, 05:54 AM
Wait wait, I'm not an Intel end-user reseller.
About your cooling section, seems to be really good, so I think that you'll got good OC out of your chip!
freshy98
08-11-01, 06:01 AM
I think so too.
it idle's now at lower than 3 degrees C, stopped there because I don't wan't condensation in my PC :-)
full load under Prime95 is 44C to 45C.
temp's recorder with MBM 5.08
maybe I'll need better cooling for the 1.2GHz, but this will do fine for now.
hopefully the SK-6 works better for me :-)
I just gonna let it burn in for like a week or so, and then try 1.7VCore again.
The Doors
08-11-01, 06:09 AM
I'm not experienced with Peltier, but I prefer a lot of fans into my Box, No water and No condensation :-) it's more safe.
About the Thermalright SK6, well seems to work really cool, infact I'm thinking to replace the Fop32 on my Tb1200@1400 with it, coz it's too high the temperature during this days (over 50C@full load with an ambient around 35C).
freshy98
08-11-01, 06:19 AM
I work with this Peltier for little over a year now with much sattisfaction too.
If you look at my case (well, it's review here on the site) you will see it has very good cooling.
Although I would like to add some stuff to eliminate noice (forgot the name of it)

hehe allright then, try looking for the thread "Celeron 850 experiences"
THAT'S IT !!!
I've gotta get one of these new 100FSB Cellies to play with...lol
You guys are having too much fun with 'em.. I'm feeling left out...hehehehehe
Jeez Louise, 1100+ at default vcore?!?!? Posts at 1200?? I gotta get me one of those... =)

I second that Brian!
At those prices we HAVE to get a sample each to play with. What are you going for? I think I will try shooting for a 850.
But then again, I'm not sure it would smoke my P3@1001.
The Doors
08-11-01, 12:26 PM
Well, and I'm thinking to the C2 900, it's the base to made a comparative test :-)
freshy98
08-11-01, 12:43 PM
well..1133 at default VCore was going quite allright, but 1.8V is better :-)
1200 is really my goal, although 150MHz FSB would be even cooler (not as in temp ;-) ) which is 1275MHz. I think it should be possible with like a 80W peltier.
at 1133 I think I can get under 0C

guys, please check over here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=29208) it's my own thread on my 850MHz Celeron.
It has al the details..I think.

Very impressed, looking all the stuff that you are going to buy, well I think that you wanna gain an Extreme OC!
Good luck, and let me know the results;-)

I just bought a 300 watt and a huge p4 sink today. This is my biggest project since I built my first and current computer. I don't really have any experience with cooling but I also had no experience with building computers when I did mine.
current computer;
OS- win nt
64 meg pc100
celeron 433@540
seagate 4g scsi and 2.4g ide
sony spessa 8*4*32 scsi
radeon ve
My computer after my upgrading and project;
OS- win 2000
256meg pc 133 ram
celeron 900@1200+
seagate cheetah 10,000 rpm 18g
sony spessa 8*4*32 scsi
radeon ve
I'm siked just talking about it!!

It's very nice to buy a P4 heatsink, but I size does not always matter. I believe my Thermaright SK6 will out do your P4 heatsink.
As for the Cheeatah... why??? They are very expensive and you'll need a very expensive SCSI controller 'cause the drive is so fast you might need a U160 controller or somehting like that.
cyberey66
08-13-01, 10:53 AM
For the scsi drive I quess it could be overkill but I saw one for $100. I have a iwill scsi controller that I boot scsi with. It says something about 133Mb/s peak but they make the cheetahs 68 pin ultra wide 40Mb/s and my controller should do fine. It has 1 50 scsi, 1 68 pin scsi and an 68 to 80 adapter. But mayby I'll wait off on getting the drive.
freshy98
08-13-01, 12:46 PM
$100 Dollars? Is it fallen of the truck or something???
I'd go with some IBM's or WD's. At least drives who can handle high FSB's.
Little explanation: Let's say the FSB of the CPU is 66MHz, than the normal PCI bus speed would 33MHz. At 75MHz the PCI bus speed would be about 37,5MHz. And at 83MHz FSB it would be 41MHz.
Alot of SCSI controllers can't handle this (not speaking on experience though). Drives like from IBM (my most experience) can handle that OK.
I read that the newer Maxtor's and other manufactures now also can handle those high PCI bus speeds, but I can not confirm as I don;t have other drives than the IBM's.
I hope this will help you in deciding your HD.

Thanks for the info. My fsb is now at 83 but my scsi drives, both my sony spressa and my quantum fireball run fine but I will research more on the drives. I couldn't believe the price either I thought it retailed for $300-400. They are factory refurbished maybe thats why.

refurbished??? what kind of cheetah's are they man! not the new ones from some months ago!
cyberey66
08-13-01, 03:39 PM
check ebay for 10.000 rpm cheetahs. Some are new, refurb or used. This one ended at $100 no reserve and still no one got it (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1259099870)
I see them all the time end at $100.

08-13-01, 04:40 PM
I dunno. Just sounds way to cheap for such a drive. And refurbished really sounds bad. Not refurbishing as such, but that they are already and not even be so old (just a couple of months).
