Well I am a RAP Fan, I'm only slightly a fan of HipHop though
Favorite songs,
Biz Markie " Just a Friend" ( Probably the most under-rated Rap song of all time, never being recognized until long after it was released )
Tone Loc " Funky Cold Madina"
RunDMC " Tricky", "Bounce" "Walk this way" ( Probably my Favorite group from the dawn of Rap )
Sir Mix a-lot " Baby GOt Back"
The Pioneers, or revolutionaists (sp)
The Sugar Hill Gang ( Everyone knows atleast PART of one of there songs since it has been redone and used all over the place )
LL Cool J,
RunDMC
Kurtis Blow ( been doing it from the start )
MC Hammer (I hate to say it but he helped bring it to the forfront)
Cypris Hill, ( though they considered them self ROck Starts not Rap stars, they definatly show signed of what is now Rap, and did make the border between Rock/Rap much more blended )

I personally prefer older rap, like NWA and Ice Cube. Something about them seems alot more "real" than most of the people today who are just attempting to sell rap albums to sub-urban wiggers.
i am a personal fan of Tech n9ne. I like how he is somewhat like the others but hase a little bit differnt style

I used to be a fan of just rock, but have now come over to the underground/indy hip-hop/rap scene as well.
Check Out:
Sage Francis
Non-Prophets (Sage and his counterpart Joe Beats)
Aesop Rock
Buck 65
Jedi Mind Tricks
The Coup
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien/Deltron 3030/Hieroglyphics

As far as rock goes, I like pretty much all facets of it. Hard Rock, Punk, Emo... you name it. Not a fan of anything with ridiculous yelling and screaming.

I agree w/ you about Eminem, deRusset. There are few rappers out there who flow as smoothly and articulate as clearly as Em.
I've been more into Rock lately, but Hip Hop is still near the top of my list. I've been into:
Nirvana
STP
Pearl Jam
Slipknot
KoRn (the old stuff)
System of a Down
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Sublime
Flogging Molly
Sound Garden
Audioslave
Chilli Peppers
Incubus (Science only, they got really lame after Make Yourself)
Metallica (old stuff)
Queens of the Stone Age
Static X
7 Dust
Ludacris
Eminem
50 Cent
D12
Neptunes
Deltron
Wu-Tang (especially their old stuff - I'm surprised nobody brought them up yet)
Lords of the Underground
Ice Cube
NWA
These are all that come to mind at the moment. I tend to like a lot of the older early 90's alternative the most right now.
yo yellow dart why dont yu like the new Korn?
i have every one of their cds and i love their music
i am also a big fan of
Godsmack
incubus(old stuff to)
rammstien
there is a buch of others that i like but i just had a brain fart and cant remeber them now!! lol
but i have to agree with yu guys that eminem is one of the best vocalists in the rap inudstry

Warren G
Geto Boys ( those that have seen the movie Office SPace would know there HIGHLY Edited song, "damn if feels good to be a gangster"
Timbaland ( sp )
Jermain Depri ( sp )

Eminem is one of the only rappers that I'll listen to. He's got some amazing stuff. There aren't too many artists out there that can get you into the music like he can, period (be it rap, rock, blues, jazz or whatever).
Besides that I'm more of a rock fan. Vocals are key for me. I can listen to anything that has overpowering vocals that make the song stand out. Some of the bands I listen to a lot:
Linkin Park
Hoobatstank
Incubus (old stuff)
STP
Finger Eleven
3 Doors Down
Creed
Lucky Boy's Confusion
Good Charlotte
Bowling for Soup
Riddlin Kids
Disturbed
Taproot
Tool
Deftones
Staind
Pantera
Greenday
Drowning Pool
Lost Prophets
Evanessence
Cold
Smashing Pumpkins
That's a pretty short list and there are plenty of others that I could add. I just went through my cd book and picked out the ones that I listen to a lot :D. I'm a total music geek. I can't sing and I can't play an instrument but I love music every bit as much as I love computers. Those are my only two hobbies really.
Zebrahead's "helllo tomorrow" and "rescue me" two of the best songs ever.
Their music video for playmate of the year is pretty darn nice too.

lol, I forgot to add Godsmack!!! They kick ASS live. Simply amazing. Disturbed is up there as well. ;)
The newer KoRn seems to have lost some of its edge to me. Either that, or I've just gotten disenchanted with their sound. Not sure exactly what it is. Anyway, imo, they sorta took a nose dive with Untouchables.
deRussett: I'll add Onyx and Timbaland to my list too. ;)
-=[edit]=-
Also, bands like AC/DC, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc all roxxorz. They're on my list o' goodness, even though I initially forgot to put them there. :p They belong on almost everybody's list by default. :D

though my Favorite ACDC song is
Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution ( Back in Black)

Pretty much all I listen to is rap, followed by jazz, then techno.
I was surprised none of the rap fans mentioned:
Royce Da 5'9"
Twista
A Tribe Called Quest (and/or Q-Tip, for that matter)
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Obie Trice
Dilated Peoples
The Roots
Royce Da 5 9's latest album is really hot (album cover in my avatar), arguably one of the best solo albums released in 2003/2004. Dilated Peoples' latest album, Neighborhood Watch is also amazing, but not their best (The Platform or Expansion Team would take the cake for that). They are really sick; 2 amazing MC's and a ridiculously talented DJ, all from LA.

Im pretty un-original when it comes to music. If its not on the radio, Im FAR too lazy to go out and dig on my own LOL. Therefore, I tend to stay with the times as most would say, and listen to the "hits" that come on the radio. I like the new Usher, Jay-Z, Chingy, etc etc... As far as rock, I like Shinedown, Linkin Park, Evanescence, etc...
Some old stuff that I still listen to alot are TOOL, Pink Floyd, and any OLDER hits that USED to be played on the radio :D

I hate rap. And I hate this whole "gangsta rap" movement even more.
Rock fan here.
They don't use the same repetitive fruity loop beats as rap does.
>HyperlogiK<
06-03-05, 04:19 AM
I hate Rap, the lyrics are largely meaningless, and it advocates a flashy blingy and empty lifestyle.
I hate Heavy Metal, it's like punk, but without an anarchist/political element, and the bands just don't seem to mean it anyway.
Some Punk, like the Ramones and early Offspring I like a lot.
Some early Hip Hop like, Grandmaster Flash and A Tribe Called Quest are cool though.
Psychedelic Rock (Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, The Beatles, Greatful Dead, Neutral Milk Hotel, WCPAEB, Buffalo Springfield, Hendrix, Cream) and proper rock and roll (Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly) really do it for me.
I really dislike this recent craze in the UK for fashionable indie like The Libertines and Kaiser Chiefs, etc.
But I like some west coast USA chilled rock like eels, some Chilli Peppers (although Californication is one of the worst tracks of all time).
For going out, no rock concert or rap event (and I have been to my fair share of both) comes close to the experience of a Rave or Warehouse Party (the proper underground kind, in some building where part of the roof is missing, and the speakers are running off petrol generators), losing yourself to Acid Techno is amazing.
Favourite songs,
Jefferson Airplane: White Rabbit, Lather
Beatles (too many to list) For The Memory of Mister Kite, Octopusse's Garden, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Polythene Pam.
Flash & Melle Mel - Adventures on the Wheels of Steel
Michael Jackson - Bille Jean (only jacko song I like)
Stones: Painted Black
Buffalo Springfield: Expecting to Fly, For What It's Worth
Eels: First 2 albums and the new one
The Prodigy: None of the awful Dance/Rap/Rock crossover stuff, but their first album 'Experience' blows me away.
Greatful Dead: Johnny B Goode, Early Morning Rain
Jean Jacques Perrey - EVA
Justified Ancients of Mumu - Whitney Jouins The Jams
BBC Radiophonic workshop - Dr Who Theme (Orbital Remix)
loads of others.

country and techno in the same day, woah dude, careful your head might explode. Try listening to Johnny Cash 'Quiet American IV' and then 'Shutterspeed' by Pavo & Zany or 'Uberdruck' if you want to prove this.

Brass Munk
Common

Jay-Z (some of it)
Jurrassic 5

I hated rap initially but have grown to really like it, the trick is finding the good stuff because 99% is garbage. Yes, they only use one or two beats per song but they can make it pretty damn interesting.

oh yeah forgot the
Beastie Boys, Dr Octago, Jurrasic 5 and Mos Def
and
The Youngbloods, The KLF, Beats international, LTJ Bukem, Mr Scruff, HEXSTATIC, 2 Many DJs, The Pogues (before Shne McGowan replaced quite ALL the blood in his body with heroin and Guinness), The Small Faces, Enya is good when the drugs are wearing off, DJ SY.

I don't like alot of the mainstream radio stuff that everyone else seems to like - for example last night driving home Gwen Stefani came on and I just can't figure out what is so great about a song where someone spells out BANANAS for the last two minutes?
Now then, alot of bands I like have already been listed, so I'll try to only list ones that haven't, in hopes of enlarging someone's musical horizons ;) I will warn you I'm a sucker for catchy pop/rock and I also enjoy more mellow sounds than alot of people so far seem to!
I like rock, but not the death/screaming-more-than-you're-singing kind. I also spend alot of time listening to singer/songwriter type artists, and performers such as Josh Groban - because I'm basically half vocal-performance major right now in college. A few CD's that I've been listening to most often lately (way too many to list them all):
Dishwalla: Their latest cd is great, you might have heard their new single "Collide" on the radio. Also *love* their "Live From The Flow State" and "Opaline" albums. Can't pick favorites from these guys, give them a listen!
Hot Hot Heat: Listening to these guys never fails to perk up my mood. Check out "Goodnight Goodnight" and "Running Out of Time" by them, but I really like the whole album, almost no filler.
The Killers: Alot of you know these guys I'm sure - somewhat similar to Hot Hot Heat musically, in that their both have a somewhat indie-rock sound. Favorite tracks on their debut CD are "Mr. Brightside" and "Jenny Was A Friend of Mine".
Howie Day: Singer/Songwriter. Just starting to get radio play around here anyway with his "Collide". Excellent artist, great vocalist/guitarist. Check out "She Says" and "Ghost" as well as "Collide" of course.
Muse: The whole "Absolution" album from these guys is just great. "Time Is Running Out" should give you an idea of what these guys are capable of, but they also have a few excellent slower tempo songs.
Ours: Don't seem to be very well known, which is a shame. The lead singer is extremely talented vocally, he has incredible range. The whole "Distorted Lullabies" album is worth the price, I unfortunately couldn't get into their second album as much. My favorites (hard to pick only a few) include "Medication" and "I'm A Monster". Also be sure to listen to "Dizzy".
Travis: Good UK band. The entire "The Man Who" CD, just go buy it right now, the whole thing is excellent if you like mellow/sad/depressed rock - and who doesn't? :p They actually do have a few upbeat songs, try "The Fear" and "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" guess which one of those is the upbeat one?
Ben Folds (and Ben Folds Five): Ben's really come into his own after going solo from Ben Folds Five. His "Rocking The Suburbs" album is great from start to finish.
Keane: Another UK band, although these guys use piano's instead of guitars. Interested? You should be because the vocals are awesome. This guys range is unbelieveable, and the lyrics are good as well. Hard to pick only a few favorites, but try "Everybody's Changing", "Somewhere Only We Know", and "She Has No Time". Also like "Snowed Under" (not on their debut album, it's a B-side).
That's enough for now, I might post more if anyone actually likes my musical tastes :o :D

I always find it slightly amusing when punk or metal bands still try to 'ROCK' when they are going bald, can't afford to jump around too much anymore, and really don't sound all that angry now that their kids are at expensive private schools and they can afford therapy. a la the offspring (who used to be fantastic) and the rolling stones, aerosmith, metallica, ozzy osbourne (hahhaha!).

I am with Orange Fire on this one. To much rap and I start gouging ice picks in my ears to relieve the pain. Rock (not metal) usually has feeling or meaning to it. Rap (not R&B)is just everyone procaliming that they are better than everone else.
I was reading this whole list and could not believe that one of the FIRST rock/rap bands was left out until HIBNER hit on them.
ANTHRAX.
They were one of the first metal bands that said that they liked and listen to rap. They even did mixed tours with rap acts opening for them. Then they did "bring the noise" with Public Enemy. that is where alot of the current rock/rap started.
Metal guy here that has recently been getting into "trance hop" or whatever you call it. I've seen it listed so many different ways. Currently into Goldfrapp, AIR, Peace orchestra and Massive Attack.

god trance-hop, trance and bass, hardhop, rapcore, trip-hop, hip-house, darkcore, jazzcore!? what are all these made up genres and where do they come from? is there some guy who is solely employed by the RIAA to invent them for record companies?
I think it's more of a product of the internet and file sharing. Theres all this new music and people want to find more of it so they had to come up with a name. Back when it was just racks ina store they would either get lumped in with other music or just not bought. Stores only had so much space.
people dont like being "generlized" so they go and make up their own genre, when in fact, it still sounds pretty much the same :D
what's trance..and all that mean anyway?

Well for me when I first moved from Europe (1999) to Florida I lived in a ghetto neighborhood and was forced to listen to Rap and I liked it. Couple of years ago when my parents got into the business we moved to suburbs and that's when I got into the Rock music and now I listen to both, strange I know
And yes Goth people scare me!

what's trance..and all that mean anyway?
it seems to mean different in europe and the US, in the US it seems to be more poppy uplifting dance music, in europe more harder and more acid dance (well it used to be anyway, european trance went downhill ~2001). Although there are some good canadian trance and NGR labels (and probably US too but I don't know them). I think maybe the stuff US labels picked up on was the money making poppy style.
look here for some examples:

plesanter yes, but most techno isn't really meant for listening to.

I love listenin to DJ Irene. Fast paced, catchy and REALLY LONG pieces (80min).. the whole cd interlinks with eachother (so like if you play song 9, at the end when it switches to 10, its a discreet switch, sounds like the same song)

hmm, I don't really count stuff like orbital, eat static, klf and ambient listenable stuff as techno (although i love it). I always take techno to mean more hard acid techno or hardcore (proper hardcore, not stupid gabba) stuff like Red Alert & Mike Slammer, early prodigy (Everybody in the Place, Charly, Out of Space), DAVE the drummer etc.
