windows me problem help please

hi friends, i am fixing this guys computer, he said it won't start i found this error message
can't complete update of file %1 of %2
press any key, if windows fails to load run SETUP again.
so i hit enter and it booted, i was doing some tests and found that whenever i install any security updates or software in general i get this error, what can i do other than re-installing, please help

make sure your date and time are correct. In win2000 if they are too far off the windows update will not function correctly. I'd also take that drive out of the system and load it in another system and scan it for viruses.
