i know what it shoudnt be but here is the situation.

i was on a dsl 1.5Mbps and getting appropriate speeds, no problem there. my service recently upgraded to 3Mbps service but i saw no increase. i wasnt really surprised, i just switched from a cable isp where the same thing had happened (upgrade and no change in speed).
anyway i was running perfectly happy until yesterday when my router kicked out on me 2 or 3 times in an hour and i decided to try and take it out of the equation. uppon setting up my computer to run the internet connection, and connecting, i found that my speeds were much much higher. nearly the full 3Mbps.

Q&As
what kind of router?: linksys befsr41 (firmware 1.45.7). this router should not have the capability to limit the bandwidth, correct?
your cables might be bad: just checked them recently and all are ok
why not run without the router?: 2 computers share the connection. i'd love to use ICS but they dont get along and are ignoring each other when directly connected, yes with a crossover cable. (no firewalls, winxp or otherwise)(why are they sometimes choosing diff subnets, and how do i change that?) and i'd really like some kind of NAT protection

my isp has its own speedtest site and running it on both of the computers reports a 1.38Mbps connection.
anyway so if it cant be the router, and it really shouldnt, what else is it?

i have contacted my isp and their (normally exceptional) tech support has no idea.

edit: upload speed always peaks at 40k with or without the router

When we get speed bumps, we have to reset our modem to get the new speed. Is the other computer on when you take these tests? It's possible it is doing something that could be hogging half the bandwidth on your network.

Your model is supposed to be able to handle a 10Mbps WAN connection (~1.5MBps), however, on the box, it advertises a max of 1.5Mbps. That is considerably less than 1.5MBps. Apparently its a type-o, but if it's not- thats the explanation for why you are having speed problems.

i'm looking at my router box and i dont see any specs for the max speed, and it turns out my full model no. is befsr41-ca ver.2. i've had this thing for about 2 years now

thanks
