I can upgrade for $10.00 more-128kbps to 384kbps. Will i notice a difference in online gaming? (UT2004?)

Thanks.

I assume your refering to your internect connection....If so, then sure......but $10 bucks seems high.....what do you pay now?

No, you will not see a difference in gaming if you increase your bandwidth. You will only see a difference when downloading things, like files or web content.

guess not....

neog

Yes, my internet connection.

Right now I pay $29.95 for the 128. For $39.95 I get 384. I would not mind paying for it, as long as it is noticeable.

What difference would it make in UT2004? How would the faster speed help?

thanks.

Also, what is more important: upload or download speed?

Well, I guess I don't need to spend the money on it...

Both upload and download are important, since you are sending data to the server and receiving back. Your internet connection will not normally be the bottleneck for the information, but rather the pipelines that are between your computer and the server, and how much traffic is going through them.

Is that 384KBps or Kbps(Bytes or bits?) You wouldn't notice a difference in gaming, but downloading stuff definitely.

neog
04-21-04, 04:12 PM
Sorry, Kbps.

EclipseJP
04-21-04, 05:53 PM
OUCH!!! 40 bucks for that. Are you not able to get cable or dsl?

Anyways at my work we upgraded from 128 to 384 and I noticed a significant increase in speed on internet browsing and downloading. So I think its worth it if you are already paying the 30 bucks a month.

tom10167
04-21-04, 06:35 PM
128Kbps = 16KBps

384 = 48KBps. Personally, I wouldn't pay $10 more a month for that, then again, I wouldn't spend $30 on 128Kbps. Where do you live, maybe there's a broadband location nearby. You wouldn't be on ISDN would you?

actuall yfor 10 bucks more definnatly go for it, you will se a big differnce. Specailly in ut2k4. Most ppl assumed your DL rate was 128KBps but didnt realise it was 16KBps which will make a HUGE difernce.

Actually, I'm home now, and it says i'm connected at 100Mbps. It is broadband DSL. I It is free for me upgrade the download speed to 384, but cost $10.00 more to upgrade the upload speed. Is it still worth it... for the upload?

thanks guys.

04-21-04, 10:17 PM
Ouch man that hurts... I could have gone $30 for 128kbps down or 40 for 2048kbps down... guess which one I got!

Go for the more upload. Will help with pings. Plus with that upload speed you could host a webserver or shoutcast server with that bandwidth.

thats some crappy pricing what is your location

with bandwidth more is always better

esp upload

cable gets you 3 MBits for about 55 ...seems a better deal to me..

actualy thats cheap i have to pay 50 for 128kbps!!

Bensa
04-23-04, 02:19 PM
Whoah, that is expensive shard. I pay 50 for 525 up and 200 down. I also get webspace and a big mailbox. Its a cable provider, so its just plug-and-play aswell.

My cable upstream is only 15KB/s and it's $30 a month. Plus I share the connection with my roomate.

What's your upload neog?

I'd prolly save the $10 if your upload is pretty good right now.

well i live about 70 miles north of SLC. I dont know if yu know where that is but i live in the middle of nowhere and i am one of the lucky few that have DSL LOL

back home in stl we're paying 30 bucks a month for a 2MB connection, definetly comes in worthwhile when you got more than three computers on there. basic is 384Kb, which is more than enough for gaming with 1 or two machines. but $40 for that is outrageous, here its 30 (we're paying 30 for the highend for the first few months).

btw, if youre connected through a router or switch, it will tell you your connection is 100MBs, however, thats network speed, not internet speed.

Here are the results of an internet test I just did:

2004-04-23 20:34:47 EST: 1150 / 211
Your download speed : 1177695 bps, or 1150 kbps.
A 143.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 216216 bps, or 211 kbps

Looks like i'm getting more than i'm paying for?

My upload/download should be 128kbps

Ill bet... *looks in paypal account* $2 That this guy has Verizon DSL

Your upload and download shouldnt be 128kbps. You are thinking just upload. Download with nearly all broadband ISP's is usually around 1.5mbit (more for cable). That is what you are getting for download.
Like said before your upload is probably 256kbps.

Verizon recently upgraded customers accounts from 768/128 (download/upload) kbps dsl to 1500/256 for free to compete with cable internet. I also heard from a verizon employee they are upgrading customers who are within 12,000ft of the CO to 3000/384kbps for free

Im only 3,000ft away :D

Well, I wouldn't pay for the additional upload (well, not $10 US anyways). as it's not really worth the price IMO.

You could also go to www.dslreports.com and use their tools and tweak your connection to increase your bandwidth.

just ran a test on my cox cable (not completely accurate though, due to roommate using kazaa  )

2004-04-24 12:11:55 EST: 2650 / 245
Your download speed : 2714052 bps, or 2650 kbps.
A 331.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 251461 bps, or 245 kbps.

we pay $39/month for the cable (this includes an extra $7 for a little extra bandwidth)

this is what the school network gives us (Rolla, MO):

2004-04-25 11:17:00 EST: 3414 / 703
Your download speed : 3496911 bps, or 3414 kbps.
A 426.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 720730 bps, or 703 kbps.

$10 for 3x the speed is worth it. My dsl is free b/c I work for an ISP but we charge $75/mo for 1.5m/128k. Yes, we are expensive, but we cater to businesses more and residential less.

I can get Covad DSL 3mb/900k for $65/mo if I wanted to. It all depends on your area. High end Japanese residential connections are 100mbps fiber to the home :p Some California areas can get 10mbps fiber too.

I got the comcast deal 3mb down and 256 up. $26 for 3 months and $45 after. Sometimes comcast can be a pain in the a$$. just this month they said my check bounced. And charged me a $25 xtra bounce fee. Made me go all the way down to their center. Their center than told me i had to call a number. When i called the number they said the reason my check bounced was because when they were processing the check it got cut by the machine and it cut off the bank account number. Err big pain

It's SBC (phone co.) dsl that I have. They upgraded my d/l for free. I just ran another test on their site:

Your Throughput

Download = 1.185 Mbps
Upload = 217.92 kbps

Not bad for $30., I guess.

Heh I love my 5000/512 Comcast Pro service. It would normally cost I think $95 a month, but my father's company has a deal with them that their employers get the pro service for free.

I honestly would not upgrade unless you're unsatisfied with the performance. Heck, when I had 3000/384 I was happy with that. But now I love getting a 12 mb file in 20-30 secs.

I normally do not D/L large files, so I'm happy with the service.

I was just thinking in terms of game performance. We like to have every advantage we can, right?

If just one person is playing the game or using the connection then 128k upload is just fine for all games out now.
So right now your golden.

The game out that consumes the most bandwidth is farcry which requires a whopping 7-8KB/s per client. 128kbps upload provides 12KB/s

You are forgetting the 20% tcp/ip overhead. Divide it by 10 for an accurate estimate of actual bandwidth you will get.
Theroetical doesnt mean squat.

To the person earlier on that said they were connected at 100Mbps...that's just your lan speed, and you'll only see that if you have a 100Mbps router connecting your pc to other pcs which have 100Mbps NA's.

I work for Cox Comm...they just released the tiered HSI in my area, 128/128 for those who just wanna pay a tiny bit more for having a constant connection, the standard $40/mo service which is 3000/256...and a Premier which costs $80 to $90/mo, over priced like hell, but, I picked up the Premier when it came out because I get 50% off anyways. 4000/384.

I wouldn't mind being on OOL, but, I'm not, and I'm not gonna cry over it.

I'm running on a shared line and I get about 200KB up but ping varies a lot so it really doesn't have anything to do with bandwidth. Mostly, it's how the isp routes your packets which will determine your ping (the most important thing for a gaming connection).

hehe, this is starting to turn into a poll. :D i'm in socal using adelphia. i ran the test also and got this:

"2004-04-29 16:17:38 EST: 2696 / 236
Your download speed : 2761426 bps, or 2696 kbps.
A 337 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 242438 bps, or 236 kbps"

on some tests i get 3 mbps. anyhow i pay $50/month for cable. it's worth it. it's very fast when downloading and playing on game servers. :)

Nooo, I'm in California. I'm stuck with RoadRunner cable and the like if I move out of my apartment which currently offers shared T1.
