View Full Version : Copper causes electrical "noise"
Hi all I just got my danger den water cooling kit all setup and installed a few days ago and have been contemplating what could be going wrong, ever since I installed that big copper p4 water block my core voltage is coming in at 1.5v where it should be 1.7v,and whenever I set it back to 1.7 it kicks back down to 1.5v. Also my cd-rom drives will not open when I push the open buttons, would it be from that big cube radiator is putting out some "noise" and not allowing the open command to work? Or is it that big cube radiator on top of my tiny little 300w power supply and is causing some electrical "noise" and interrupting the amount of power it is sending out? If anyone has any ideas as to what could possibly be wrong please help. I will post some pics of my setup later this afternoon when I get a digital camera all set up.
my ststem:
p4 1.7ghz
abit th7-raid
kenwood 72x cd-rom
creative labs 8x cd-rw
soundblaster live!
geforce2 ultra
firewire card

I am not sure what your problem is, but it is not copper. Noise is an induced current, to get that you must either have moving electrons or something moving in a magnetic field(this is how a generator works). Your copper stuff is not moving, so there could not be an induced current. Now, fans have this movement and can produce a fair amount of electrical noise. But I am not sure that is the problem either.
You might post in the Intel mobo area and see if anyone is familiar with your board and its settings.
ok thank you ridenow, my problem is that my chip will not stay at the correct core voltage ever since i installed this setup, maybe it is that big 120mm fan on top of my psu on the radiator? i am cluless hehe, thanks again.

I don't know about that fan but it is a voltage problem. unplug the fan and see if the core voltage stays where it should.

Most likely you have a mag drive water pump. They emit magnetic fields and generate noise. Try wraping your pump in aluminum foil and grounding the foil to the case . . . . .
AHA! Genius! I do have an in-line eheim pump! It is inside the case as well, so I should wrap it in aluminum foil and then how would I ground it? Thank you so much dimmreaper!

There is no way to really contain magnetic fields so you gotta distance your pump from the other stuff. If you want to insulate someting from radio and microwaves then grounded aluminium foil is the way to go (a la Enemy of The State?)

yes yes! i understand the alumin foil, my question now is how do i ground it to the case?

you could get a piece of wire, bolt one end to your case and put the other end inside a crevice of the foil.
