I have a laptop that I use most of the time now, and I was wondering which one people think I should get. I plan to get an M-Audio external sound card with that as well. Sonica theatre, Sonica, or Transit. Anyone have experience with these speakers or sound cards? THanks in advance for the advice.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Z-5300's. Everyone that owns them seems to love them and they are a really good price for what you get. I havnt heard anything about the altec speakers, but I dont think it really matters since for the price the Z-5300's are just amazing.
By the way I suggest you get the Z-5300's ;) .

I went to check them out today again, couldn't really test the sound properly cause the store i was at had hooked them up to the radio. That didn't help, but the subwoofer of the Z5300s are really massive and they look like they're quality made. Whereas the altecs do look under powered.
Well, the only proper way to tell is to listen to it. The looks don't determine the quality of the system.

I suppose I have to find a place with both of them side by side, or else it'll be kidna hard to compare.

I own the Z5300s, and they certainly do have a lot of kick. I find myself keeping the bass level at minimum most of the time, hehehe. But when it's time to show my buddies what I'm packin', they're always impressed.
The only real negative thing I can say about them is that they don't come with a decoder, so unless your soundcard has one, your centre speaker is useless :(
But I think the only ones that COME with a decoder are the 640s... which are waaay too expensive.

It's the 680s that come with the decoders. I am also a proud owner of the Z-5300s. I love these things. For the price (under $150), the sound quality is unsurpassed. I suggest you get them.

Does the soundstorm have a decoder that will allow all the speakers too work?

I personally love altec lansing - iv got a set of their 4.1 ADA885's and iv yet to hear anything that'll touch em for sound quality and power. Just my opinion tho

i have the lansing 2100. they sound great, but they dont pump out the bass like an expensive set of logitechs or klipsch. i think they have two 4-inch drivers. there are subs out there that have 2 10-inch drivers i think. you can pick up the 2100 cheap at staples sometimes.

altec speakers are muddy and lack frequency range. pick one up it feels almost like its empty. *suspects it most likely is mostly empty.* Same principle that applies to power supplies applies to speakers if its feather light there is probably a good reason for it.
i dont like logitech either. i just cant stand to see another 0.01 go to altec. make them build a product worthy of buying. you just encourage them to continue making crap if you buy from them at this point.
I've had an Altec 251 for about two years and have nothing but good things to say about it, but the Z-5300 should blow anything in that price range out of the water, except for maybe the Z-560s.
