The big red monster I'm still working on...
I'm not sure if you'll see it in the pictures, but it has gold handles, gold expansion plate (where expansion cards connect to), gold metal plate for mounting the HD's and CD-ROM's. Also, its modded with 120mm fan in back and a 120mm fan (radiator is in the picture) in front.

I have 3 UV cathodes anf 1 blue. I think the blue is off in most of the pics. I used a couple different UV reactive paints on the cards and such.

I had drawn a pic for my tattoo back in the early 90's (Pearl Jam days) and thought that would make an awesome window. Spent about 50 hours trying to get just an outline of it. Got it perfected and took it to A-Z Manufacturing in Independence MO and had them do it with a big ole 2000watt laser! Be careful of the guys using under 1500watt ones for aluminum and under 1000 for steel. They dont cut it as pretty and can melt the aluminum instead of cutting it.
I had the plexi etched with the detail of the bulldog by PCMutants (http://www.pcmutants.com). They're a great place to buy everything. The worst problem is that they don't update their site often so u have to call to find out if they have what your looking for, but they're almost always the cheapest in town AND they have free shipping.
Thanks for the compliments!
By the way, check out the fan grills with the lights on and then off! I found that paint at [URL=http://www.clearneon.com]

All temps F, Obviously

Asus A7V266-E, XP1900@1800 1.85v, GF3 @ 237/535, WD 7200 80GB

H2O / OCZ Goliath w/Delta 80mm
Room 75 / Same
Ambient case 78 / 83
Idle 92 / 133
Full load 98 / 148
GF3 f load 106 / 111
bridge 96 / 101
hdd 86 / 95

By removing the heat from the hsf, It improved all my temps greatly. Without making any changes to my settings, My 3DMark score went up 300. After some tweaking, I'm now getting 8606. Not bad for an XP1900 with GF3. I need a new board! My ASUS doesn't like to go over 150fsb. I think I'll try the Epox.

I just painted my drives today. Right now, I've got my CDRW and my SuperDisk in there now. If you can, I would try to get a charcoal colored paint, as you can see the black is too dark. Kinda ****es me off, but it looks better than have beige/white bezels.

The following case is 12 x 10 x 6 inches in size, weighs 10 pounds, and I custom made it's case from Polycarbonate Plastic (Lexan).
The 300W 1U power supply is sitting on the right hand side.

Well, sence cruzin the forums, Iv desided to do a few mods myself. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas everyone. I started with just a simple paint job and adding some fans in the side. Watercooling, a window, and lights r next. I have some design ideas for building a case, that will come later. I also am going to do the HD window mod along with the cdrom. my case

and the other side... the case is gloss black and the bezel is a hammered med metalic blue... looks alot better then in the pictures...

the seperation lines between the bezel and side panels must be glare from the flash... I also have the fan guards installed.. looks better..

i forgot to mention the black fades into the blue on the sides of the bezel... well, I guess you can see that in the pic's...

A Friend of a Friend wanted a gaming system built for as little Ca$h as possible. At the same time I was looking into upgrading my computer so I cut him a deal on the parts (I was upgrading anyways). He gave me full authority to do whatever I wanted to the case in order to make it as PhAt as it can get for CheAp. It includes a "D" shaped window, a Window on and above the DVD drive, a front intake, LED lighting, 2 Chromed fans and One White fan, Matching keyboard, Matching mouse, AND matching speakers.

Sorry, I didn't get any pictures in the dark, my digital camera sucks at those.

Woohoo! I got a power sander last week and sanded down my $10 Steel LAN case and now I don't want to paint it because I fell in love with the "delorian" look of the naked steel.

http://www.planetunreal.com/identitycrisis/cabins/cs/modding/invader1.jpg

The whole case is only 12" x 15" x 3.5" and will soon house a mobile gaming system. Temporarily outfitted with Celeron 300@600, 128MB RAM, 10GB HDD. In September it might switch to a Duron 900 and 256MB PC2100 DDR. But that depends on how much I enjoy the current setup which is completely silent.

I'll add the blacklight and windows soon.

Finally got my hands on a digital camera long enough to snap a few of my boxen. I don't know if you would call this one a "mod" per say, but I call it the stickermod. :D

Pic1 (http://ocimg.blackpacket.net/oldbox1a.jpg)
Underneath all that is a K6-2 200Mhz with 96 Mb of EDO ram. (Now you see why I covered it up :p)

Pic2 (http://ocimg.blackpacket.net/oldbox2a.jpg)
Lets see... removable bay (sucks, but i modded a fan into it), SCSI 6x cartridge load CD-Rom (FEEL the old), then a 2x IDE cdrom. You can see by the side that the final coat is very reflective.

Pic3 (http://ocimg.blackpacket.net/oldbox3a.jpg)
Let's see.. A bunch of Cyrix x86 stickers (these took the longest to apply), in most places there are two layers of them . Got a few "Stop and think: Look, Assess, Control, Proceed" stickers from a safty meeting somewhere.. The orange/yellow ones are the "Warning: Can tip over resulting in risk of injury, do not allow children to move this unit." Also got a Canada Post label, and a few shiney happyface stickers.

This is a conversion of a 1946 Bush DAC 90 bakelite radio into a home entertainment PC. The big brass buttons on the front are power and reset switches, between them in the round window are 200 red LEDs which belongs to two 10-channel spectrum analyzers connected to the left and right channel on the sound card. Above the spectrum analyzers which are embedded in clear cast resin is a modified CrystalFontz 634 LCD (converted from green to red and inverted). A slim line cd-rom player is located under the round brass plate.

This project is a 1996 Silicone Graphics O2 workstation with an original 17.3" widescreen LCD monitor converted to a gaming machine.

Externally, the only hint of a modification is that the audio and video ports on the left hand side has been replaced with a dark blue piece of plastic. When powered up, blue light will flood from all air intakes and the dark blue piece of plastic will reveal a Noritake graphical VFD.
The most significant modification can only be seen from behind - a new chassis made out of Carbon Fibre...

Specs:

Intel P4 2.4 GHz
Intel D850EMD2
2 x 256MB Kingston PC1066 RDRAM
Ati Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB
80GB Western Digital HDD with 8MB cache

Sparkle 300W 1U PSU

Mods:

Complete stealth mod, when the computer is powered off, only the backside will look different from an original Silicon Graphics O2 Workstation.
Chassis made out of carbon fibre.
Noritake graphical VFD.
4 x 4" blue CCFLs illuminating the internals.

Cooling:

1 x YSTech 70mm TMD fan mounted on a Swiftech MCX4000 heatsink cooling the CPU.

After a while I got the idea, why not put a 3GHz computer inside the digit three...

Specs:

Intel P4 3.06GHz
Intel D845PEBT2
512MB generic DDR333
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO
Seagate Barracuda V 80GB S-ATA
LiteON External USB2.0 40x/12x/40x CDRW
QTec 400w PSU Gold

Mods:

Complete custom case made out of watercut anodised aluminium.
2 x 12" blue CCFLs illuminating the internals from Kustom PCs.

Cooling:

1 x YSTech 70mm TMD fan mounted on a Vantec Aeroflow VP4-C7040 heatsink cooling the CPU.

This is my first case mod ever. I saw a post on how to do this so I gave it a try. I was going to add a blowhole to my Antec 3700 case to help my CPU temps, but I figured why not add a window and some lights too.

Used Lexan glass and trim from the auto shop. Can't see that much cause of my huge fan, but I like it...Fun times case modding.

The case is a modified Gateway 2000 of 1998 or ’99 vintage.
My little brother had some Honda black paint sitting around his shop so I persuaded him to shoot it on this case. After a little creative paint mixing and two coats of clear, this is the result.

This case originally didn’t have much texture on it so my brother roughed up the surface a little and the primer filled it smooth. Then he shot the color, wet sanded a little, then shot the clear. The first coat of clear had a few artifacts in it so he wet sanded again and shot another coat.
It came out perfect.
Remember though, this is all automotive paints and techniques applied to this case.
It may not work on all cases.

My GTO has been involved with a two year restoration at the moment. She should be done this winter.
She cracked a high 13 second quarter mile before the tear down.
Not bad for 5000 foot elevation (Colorado). She should run a high 12 or low 13 at sea level.
Laters.

Ya... its differnt now I will see if I can get acces to a camera but I took the PSU out of it's case and put it above the CD-ROM drives and put 2 80mm fans where the PSU was before. SO on the rad I have 3X80mm fans a 120mm fan and a 92mm fan, using the whole entire top section (from where the bottom of the PSU WOULD be up (there is a convient re-enforcment bar there to secure fans to:D)), I sealed it off from teh rest of the case w/ Duct tape for ultra Ghettoness:D

That is just a 6in lcd module that is case mounted in replace of the three 3 1/2in drive bays. The screen is used for various things,i.e. watching some tv, movies, but mostly to check temps, cpu use and voltages during benchmarks. My tv tuncer card and/or video card's s-vdeo out to the lcd's composite video-in provides the necessary signal.

pelikan: Isn't that a lot of weight to be putting on a video card? It looks like it's bending a little...

I would also move your PC speaker a little farther away from your harddrive. Back in the pentium days I had a harddrive go corrupt with the pc speaker about that far away... there's lots of room at the back/bottom of your case, that's where I keep mine.

pelikan
10-01-03, 04:02 PM
That Ti4600 survived the weight of the heatsink for about six months with no problems. For my new video card I hung the fan on a bracket under the heatsink to reduce the weight a bit.
My new Raptor is now in the hdd cage and I just got rid of the speaker.

i got this pc from ABSpc, as noted by the multiple case badges.
the only cool thing i did was that i took an older abs computer, cut out the front part of the plastic front case cover and turned it into a door. that ABS sticker was on my original (and still working) amd k2 450Mhz 128MbRAM, pos. so, the case carries some history in it via the door. the rest of it is simple jig-saw to steel elbow grease and lexan cutting.

There's lots of ways:
1) www.theforumisdown.com
2) Host it yourself, on your own webserver, or if your ISP gives you webspace, you can post it there.

Once the pic is hosted, just hit the "IMG" button on the Post Reply page. It's right above the space where you type in your reply. Then you just put in the url of where your pic is.

-Added a case fan to the front (inside the green housing)
-iCeberq 4 Pro fan w/blue LEDs on the video card.

Well, it isnt a jet engine even with all the fans blowing in full capacity, bu it isnt quite. But when the fans are at minimal speed for just daily use and web surfing it is very quite. I only turn the fans up full throttle for gaming and benching. Having a combination of water and fans works the best in my opinion.

Dutch3men, you might want to consider placing your pump in a differnt place if it will fit anywhere else. There it is pretty high up and takes a lot mroe tubing... it might reduce preformance (maybe not though too),

Well here it is, all 70 pounds of it. The details are in my sig. Basically all I have modded is: I sleeved the entire PS, I tried to hide most of the wires (fan, cathode, power), Zalman NB HS, Zalman CNPS7000-CU modded with TT Smart Fan II, and I have two cathode color schemes for different moods. I have UV/Black to show off all of the UV reactive stuff inside, and blue to shed a little light on everything else.

Well one reason is the case alone, which is 45lbs empty. Also keep in mind that I have a 2lb HS, 6 hard drives, CDRW, DVD-ROM, 7 case fans, a heavy power supply, and a bunch of cables. Thats mostly it.

Vantec Nexus Rheobus there, and coverless floppy drive ripped from an old E-Machine. You can also see where I mounted the switch for the blacklight, it's off to the side because I plan on getting some more CCFL

http://www.tymelyteindustries.com/comp/MVC-013F.JPG

I'm one of the few who have done this I guess, but that's a blue LED in this molex going to my harddrive. Looks nice and lights up the case nicely when the UV stuff isn't on. I just need to do it 2 more times for my CD-Rom drives up at the top.

http://www.tymelyteindustries.com/comp/MVC-021F.JPG

I'm ordering some cable sleeves from SVC in a few days or so, so this is as neat as my wires are going to get until then.

http://www.tymelyteindustries.com/comp/MVC-018F.JPG

Yet again my camera doesn't do justice, but I'm sure most of you have seen a UV case before, so nothing new here. I plan on getting one more UV light to run down the left side to help illuminate.

http://www.tymelyteindustries.com/comp/MVC-019F.JPG

Close up and angled view. You can see how nicely my UV fan lights up, also going to replace my other 2 fans with these, but for now, I have just the one.

http://www.tymelyteindustries.com/comp/MVC-020F.JPG

At first glance it almost appear I have watercooling with UV liquid, but sadly, no I don't.

In case you were wondering, I used a 5mm instead of the recommended 3mm blue LED. I just took a sander bit on my dremel and sanded it down to fit, and wired it with a 100 ohm resistor.

looks killer. about the vantec nexus, a while back i heard some horrible things about them (like when you turn your fans down to low speed for low noise, the controller starts buzzing louder than the fans, and vantec wont replace because they said it was normal) so make sure vantec is past that hurdle before you go installing one of their (admittedly) cool looking products.

while we're on the subject of pelikan's idea... did you ever consider making like a corkscrew/doublehelix shape with the pipes so you could dig deep instead of long? or maybe that would be asking too much of the pump? just want to know how you decided on the shape you picked really. btw, awesome!

I picked the shape for the easiest digging with unrestrictive flow pattern.
The pump could handle a deep hole like you suggested but I could not.

This is my baby.
It has taken over a year to modify it.
And this pic is actually older, and I have done other things to it( added more lights ).
I bought it cheap.
In this pic 7 of the lights are on, there are 13.
The side has limo tint and uv painted flames but there was to much of a reflection on the pic I will post it later when I get a new one.
I painted the whole thing black also, it really added the most in all the modding.
And yes that is a jet 7.

Thanks for the compliments. You cant tell becuase it was not plugged in and the camera flash was too bright, but there is a Large "Z" in the front that lights up blue and there are 2 panels in the front that are hooked up to the HD LED that blink red with HD activity. Its really pretty cool at night. I practicly built my last case from scratch but when I saw this one it was pre-moded but I had to have it. The first thing I did when I got it home was grab out the hole saw and cut all the intake and exhaust grills out. It has a quad fan intake 4x80 mm fans fit in the front of the case. I just thought that was so cool. I am not sure what I am going to add next.

See ya had to go and make a comment like that now didn't ya, LOL. When I read that it made me realize what an idiot I am for not thinking about it sooner. I have cringe at the thought every time I have to move my server around. It weighs over 50lbs and now stands 26" tall after I put the wheels on it today. I wanted some heavy duty wheels so I went to the hardware store and found wheels that could 90lbs per caster. So they can safley hold up to 360lbs with the 4 I put on it. (this is also cool just in case someone desides to sit on it) I did some wieght trimming on it today and removed 1 of the Hard Drives So she is down to 4 drives now. The wiring is a mess becuase of all the drives and the fan controller and the 6-80mm fans to keep it cool.

It is not a high power machine but it is really starting to look like it.

P3 550@ 605mhz
512mb of Ram
GF2 64mb video card
4x Hard Drives (machine can support up to 12 with the dual IDE controller cards I have for it and the 2 onboard IDE chains)
Single CD Rom and Single Floppy drive. Yes the floppy drive still gets used. Especially when frineds come over with stuff they want me to backup for them from a floppy and put on the web in a zip file.)

The machine itself is used as a file/print/web/ftp/video server. Most of it is for inter-network traffic. It is plugged into a wireless router so everyone in the house can access it. Well enough Chat, here are the pics

They are right. The fans are blowing the right way. The side that has the framework for the fan hub is the one the air comes out of, which in the pic is pointing out the back of the case, as it should.

I was wondering.....wouldn't having the 2 fans in the back of your case and the on on the side all blowing in...and having one 92mm fan on top blowing all the rising hot air out be better then having only one or 2 fans blowing in.....I mean...alot of cold air comming in...and the hot air is forced out....and since hot air raises why not help it along and make the top the ehaust and not the back?

hi guys i was modding my case and i need to know something #1 will having somthing like a mirror in the bottom help lighten up my case a little more (i am putting 1 light in it and lighted case fan)

#2 and will it affect heat/cooling

im just a noob sry

Smirabi
01-18-04, 02:29 AM
it wont make a whole lot of difference for the lighting, but it will be really cool to look at (like i have it in my case)

as far as temps, unless you're covering up vents with the mirror, it's not gonna make any differences on the temps

if you want more light, buy cathodes if you dont need more cool or more case fans if you do need more cool. and definitely do the mirror thing, you wont be disappointed.

Greetings all you Peeps!

Wow! You people are amazing. I love the custom stuff you have done to your computers.

I stumbled into these forums just checking out a little info on cooling, and discovered your mods. Some very cool stuff happening here. I particulary liked the liquid cooled systems using UV dye in the coolant. Very Purdy!

I have a stock AMD Athalon XP 2000+ in a rather plane jane generic case that I want to do something with. You have sparked some ideas that I think i will give a try.

I have done my first mod as a result of reading these forums, though it is a simple one. I had no fan space in the front of the case, so I stripped out the covers on two floppy bays that I am not using, and hung a standard fan in the bays. Suspended in a web of old phone wire strands actually.

Now my processor temp is down by 10C and I feel a little better.

Now to think of some case mods.....:D

Using a gutted fan as a spacer is a sweet idea. Think I might try it myself. How much improvement did you see by doing that?

Edit: I just gutted an old fan and stuck it in, load temp dropped 3.5c.

its a very worthwhile mod....most see temp drops of 3-7C. before the spacer, i was at 38C/46C, and now im at 32C/37C. it really narrowed the gap between my idle and load temps as well.

just a quick question what is the ducting on the back for?

pelikan

Awesome ducting Vio1. I bet it improved your temps quite a bit.
I bet your video card loves the cool air blowing right on it. Is that an sk6 on there?

su root
02-26-04, 11:38 AM
Vio1: I've heard from numerous sources that it's not a good idea to put 2 fans in the same tunnel because the slowest fan will control the speed of the entire tunnel. How is tha tunnel working out for you with 2 identical fans?

Nice job, btw... did you build that tunnel yourself?

Vio1
02-26-04, 12:09 PM
ya I built the tunnel with old cd case covers. I put ducting at the back so that the exaust will be pushed up... my bottom fan at the back is intake and with my computer under the desk, i was getting hot air from inside my case bouncing off the back of my desk and being sucked into the case again.... now with the ducts that does not happen.

With two identical fans working inside my tunnel I have seen a slight increase in the rpm of my cpu fan... its working fine.... ive seen a 7C drop in load and 3C drop in idle.

pelikan
02-26-04, 12:40 PM
Nice results. Before I switched to watercooling I used a duct and got a similar reduction in temps. Brilliant idea to use old CD cases.

I'm sure the extra fan is a good idea. Otherwise you would have lost pressure in the duct.

Contra
02-26-04, 12:47 PM
Vio1 did you glue your front bezel covers to the case covers?

looks cool

did you use something like super glue?

Vio1
02-26-04, 12:57 PM
I removed the facing on the cd/ dvd drives so that the surface would be flat... I then cut out a piece of the same clear plastic I used for the duct and used contact cement (super glue would have been better but at the time i didnt have any) and attached the plastic to the back of the slot cover (because the surface is interlaced with lastic bracing. Once that dried I used two strips (because I had removed the cd tray facing) of double sided tape to connect the slot covers to the cd tray.

-- A work in progress --

Right now im working on a project like this: http://www.dasboogles.com/linux/modded.gif

except not on a shuttle. Im gonna take full 1/16th inch acryllic on each side of my case in place of Panels, and then similar to the lettering on the shuttle on the side, im gonna have TBONE. But, the whole acryllic sheet, will be spray painted black and i'll use like ruber cement to hold down the letters i print out to keep the paint from covering those parts of the side.. Its gonna be done i hope this weekend. and it'll be lit by my two red cold cathodes. So red letters TBONE across the side..

Its gonna be nice when i finish it.
