Last I heard at beyond3d.com...Ati is gonna have cards available on the date of release. There have been reports for several weeks that the X800 cards are already to be shipped out.

*edit***

Here is some of what I was reffering to. (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11610)

Yep, it involves the Inq. but thats all anyone knows right now.

ATI Updates Next Generation VPU Launch Plans?

RADEON X800 See a Delay?
by Anton Shilov

RADEON X800-series from ATI Technologies may be unwrapped a bit later than the industry suggested, according to a report from The Inquirer web-site. There are no reasons given for the delay, but it looks like early May is the right timeframe to expect ATI’s next-generation VPU introduction.

ATI Technologies still plans to roll-out various versions of the code-named R420 VPU branded as RADEON X800 PRO, RADEON X800 XT, RADEON X880 XT and RADEON X800 SE. The solutions will enable different number of rendering pipelines: 12, 16, 16, 8 and will function at different clock-speeds that are still to be decided. Higher-end graphics cards, such as RADEON X800PRO, X800XT and X880XT will have 256 or 512MB of GDDR3 memory functioning at clock-speed in the range of 1000MHz. The performance-mainstream offering RADEON X800 SE will use memory with 128-bit bus that is clocked at lower clock-speed compared to high-end products.

There are some changes with ATI’s launch plans. Apparently, the RADEON X800 PRO will be launched on the 4th or the 5th of May, while the RADEON X800 for AGP 8x and RADEON X880XT for PCI Express x16 are scheduled for June, not May introduction, if the information is correct.

There is no information on the reasons for the postponement, however, keeping in mind that ATI has reportedly boosted specifications of its graphics processors, some additional qualification tests might be required.

Representatives for ATI Technologies usually do not comment on unreleased products.

this will hurt ati big if the 6800u hits stores before the r420 and ati knows this

I think ATI is going to screw the pooch this time around...I really do. Something is up with how they have now decided to open up all the power in their x800 cards and now the delay. I think they're shaking in their boots after NVidia's release. Of course this is just "my opinion" and I could be wrong.

We'll see the 6-series GeForce first.

Not really. The high-end performance cards make up such a small percentage of their total sales that it won't really matter.

Not completely true. Though the high end sales make up a small percentage, they are what influence the customer into buying the lower end version of the product.

i dont think ATI are all that bothered, they got themself a nice reputation again last 2 years or so at least since the 9700s were released. and then releasing great cards since. like ive said before itll end up an AMD/INTEL "war" where both really will do perfectly fine and itll be a matter of preferance as to which an individual will buy.

I read an article from Fuad on the Inquirer (he's prone to being wrong since he prints just about everything he hears) that geforce 6800U's aren't expected in large quanitities until june

i'm thinking ATi's offering will be out sooner. just a hunch though

True, but the higher end cards have the highest profit margins.

May 7th (http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?pid=8988&sid=QDW3SU88MR308NT1TVC71XN9HSTJ27C2#) for the X800, any word on the 6800??

Or is the as yet to be anounced X800 going to beat the much hyped 6800 to market?

You might give the average customer too much credit... I thought it was the pictures and statements on the box that influenced the customer into buying the lower end cards.

lol...they wouldnt put prettier pictures on the cheaper cards then on the higher end cards ;)

Sales people also help enormously with the decision...a knowldgable salesperson (one not talking out his ass...and yes, they are out there) can make big influences at his store

Of course they wouldn't, I agree. What I was saying was that people buying lower end cards aren't looking to pay for the high end product, so the common consumer looks at products in their price range and picks what looks best. The low end cards and high end cards are two different markets, and people don't go in looking at both.

I really don't think most consumers go into their technology purchases with any information, let alone any understanding of any information they do have - "Oh honey I know that box looks nice but you need to pick one of these that doesn't cost so much - look heres one that says bloody monster and its in our price range!"

I wonder why I never heard of the bloody monster I? ;)

Get your facts straight, there was never a delay ;)

Wait wait wait..I think we the consumers are uniquely in a posistion to hold off till we Have the cards side by side tested.

Imagin how it would feel to grab up a Nvidia only to find out ATI cards are better ?

And as a Business owner I can say Nvidia screwed the pooch this time. There marketing stratgy was that of the past ..What they should have done is sent test cards out while trucks where unloading at retailers....This would have secured a massive sales figure by the impulse buyer who may or may not have seen the bench tests....NOW people can sit back and wait to see which company has the better card AND Nvidia better hope ATI does not out perform them by a lot or there in serious trouble.......

To me the statement LET THE GAME BEGIN has been announced....Now lets sit back and see who will win the title for the best high end card in the industry..

Waiting has never been funner.........

Actually, both NV40 and R420 would have been out by now on retail shelves if there weren't any delays. ATI has recently delayed the R420 just a little bit more. The most recent:

I don't think that very many ppl would buy one of these cards before both are out. Unless you're a very rich and "power-hungry" and always needing the best, you would probably want to see REAL benchmarks from both cards and their retail price to decide which one to get.
