I know most people nowadays don't use 56K modems anymore, but I'm one of the exceptionals. My modem has always been very noisy when it's dialing to the internet provider. I used to have Win98, and last week i upgraded the OS to win2000. Somehow the modem became silent and didnt produce those dialing tone noises when it dialed. A few days ago I upgraded my OS again, to WinXP home edition this time. Unfortunately, the noise came back when the modem dials.
My question is: Does Win2000 automatically turn off the dialing noises of the modem while WinXP doesnt ? And is there anyway i can turn off the modem dialtone sound produced when it dials ?
I would highly appreciate all kinds of suggestions available.
You ar eprobably right 2K may disable the modem speaker by default, you can turn it off in the modem properties. Go in to the Control Panel and then go to "Phone and Modem Options" Click the modems tab and selct you modem and then hit properties, the option to turn off the speaker should be in there although its been a while since I used a modem.

Actually, the majority of people on the internet are using dial up connections mainly through 56k modems! You aren't alone.
There should be settings like Chris explained. Once you get to your modem properties dialog window, the modem tab should have the volume/speaker setting.
If you change that and it doesn't work, also try telling us the brand and model number for your modem - the initialization commands it accepts can be looked up and entered under the advanced tab... Which also should disable the modem speaker, or make it very quiet.
Back when I was on 56k and upgraded to XP pro, I could not get the modem speaker to turn off. I placed a piece of tape over modem speaker. You could still hear it, but barely. Not toal but easy and fast, just my 2 cents

I've also heard of clipping a Q-tip - the stick is just the right size to fit in the modem speaker hole, and it works very well for muting it. I've also heard of people taking pliers to it and just ripping the speaker off, and its worked. :)

If anyone still cares, if your speaker is making noise even when you have the slider set all the way to the left in your modem properties, you can add atm0 to your modem command line and the speaker will always be off.

there's another way to disable the modem...
Under the modem configurations search around for a text box labeled "Extra Settings" - I believe it is around the Hardware Buffer settings (XON / XOFF). Well, if you can find it... Add this to the extra settings: "M0" (that's right: minus quotes - M and the number zero) I switched to DSL a while back but this is what I used to use for my old 56k modem. I will edit this if I find anything further.

This is an old school mod I'm not sure anybody does that anymore but you can take the speaker off the modem and hookup LED! instead of beeping it light up like a X mas tree hehe

Just crush the speaker...Unless you want it to work again(speaker)

I didnt trash my speaker because my zoom modem is reselling for about 20.00 online. May not be a lot but its more than enough to justify mashing a speaker

Sometimes old school is always the best method... and it still works even on today's modems...
On every modem installation I do I always set that trick and I have never received a complaint from someone saying that their modem is too loud. I did thiss to my own setup before I moved to ADSL...

Some modems use "L0" instead of "M0". if you replace the 0 with a 1, it becomes "low volume".. all the way upto 3, for "deafening".
If your modem is onboard, like on a laptop, chances are the controls are in your regular windows volume controls, and you can lower it there.

You lucky 56ker! I am still on 28.8. It is more like a 14.4 really, I can only download at 2kB/s. The good part about that, is I know when I have spyware becuase it takes up all my bandwidth lol.
Anyways, I hated the noise of my modem and I went into the modem properties and disabled the modem speaker.

i used to have the same problem so i just ripped the speaker off. a crude fix but it worked. I have found that sometimes to solve a problem you just have to go straight to the sorce. :)
while my dsl was still on order staus i used a 56k for a bit...but i couldnt let my rents know, so i took a kife, opened up the speaker hole a bit, and crammed it full of otten from a q-tip.
that modem is now sitting on a speaker about 8 feet from me...hehe....i love my dsl!
@md overclocker...why dont you upgrade to a 56K? even a winmodem got me up to 4 kbs downloading....and i have like 12 pci 56K modems laying around now. (i had to get one working in 98 a while back and it wasnt working well. i can get them for free, and i did.
then i eventually ended up having my mom buy one for $12 of newegg....supported MOH so i could take calls.

I'm a week into DSL and even though I was pretty happy with dial up, I'll not go back. Besides it is only 10.00 more a month.

Same here, usually used masking tape. If I wanted it to be a little louder I would put a pin hole in the tape. You can control the volume by changing the size of the hole :p
i'm the only wireless witin a quarter mile here...i dont even run security, i jsut monitor the list of MACs to see if anyone hops on.
Same here, I can't find another signal anywhere in my neighborhood, I also just check the MAC's every now and then, since my signal is non existant by the time one is in the road, it doesn't really matter anyways....
