View Full Version : Could old harddrive be a problem?

Help......please:)

I am currently running and T'bird 900@1035 on Abit KT7A mobo.
80 F idle - 107 F load.
VCore=1.86
192M PC 100 RAM
Ati Rage Fury Pro 128

When I try to clock higher I can boot into windows, but when I try to open or run programs I get the "BSOD". I've tried different BIOS configurations but no luck.....I'm thinking that my old ATA33 harddrive may be causing these problems. (is this possible). I'm too new to overclocking to know for sure, so if any of you seasoned vets have any answers or suggestions, I would really appreciate them.

My BIOS settings are:

7.5 x 133/33 but VIA offers the additional option of FSB Plus Mhz (0-28) I have set to 5 which equals 7.5 x 138 (1035)

I would guess its your memory.
Lower the memory timings or try a higher multiplier and lower fsb.

RAM is set at 8/10ns the other options are (normal-medium-fast-turbo)....which I have tried them all. I have also tried 10.5 x 100 with all of the RAM settings but still no luck (boots to windows but no programs will operate w/o the BSOD) I'm lost......mjp

Usually the hard drive wont cause a bsod but registry errors or a hard lock (freeze).
If you have dram latch setting try setting it to the highest number.
If you have a cas setting set it to 3.
If that still does not help try raising your cpu voltage to the next step.
Just make sure your temps are within reason and stay there.

I just tried 10 X 105 and at the moment am running @1050 w/no prob. Benchmarking tests were successful and various programs appear to be running flawlessly. (also I have had no temp increase) Thanks for the advice!!!!! By the way...what do you think that the max FSB would be given my current set-up?

Hard to guess that one,it will depend how far you can run your memory out of spec you might get 140 or only 120.
Start at 120 if its ok there then go up 5mhz a time until you get bsods. Dont forget to lower the multiplier so you will know when you reach the memorys peak and not the cpu's.
Then when you find the memorys peak raise the cpu multiplier a step a time until you find the cpu's peak.
