I want to get Duke Nukem 3D working. I know its dos and XP doesnt really have a true dos and I wanted to know if theres a way to make it work in Win XP Pro.
I found THIS (http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php) site which gave alot of help. The problem is I still cant get it to go. It shows a black screen then exits. I unchecked close on exit and the window says inactive. Im stuck.
I would really want to get this classic game running but Im not sure if I can get it. Can any of you guys give a little help? Otherwise I will piece together a Pentium box I guess, lol.
Hopefully this is in the correct topic... :/
EDIT: If any of you guys wanna try to get it working File Planet has the sharewear (sp?) episode.

PC gamer actually released this game for free on one of their monthly CDs a couple years ago.
I played duke so much back then, it wasn't even funny. I'm surprised they haven't released the source code yet, making way for a windows port.
Sorry, I have no solution for your problem though.
Edit: google duke nukem 3d source windows port. I'm pretty sure they did release the source and that there are windows ports available. (linux as well)

@PingSpike: Actually the source code IS out. It was released a few months ago if I remember. I got it but haven't compiled it since I need to get the compiler they reccomended. :) But my prob is if I cant get the shareware edition to work in XP, I doubt the compiled version would to.
@DDR-PIII- Make any progress?
@9mmCensor- I may do that when I get my new HD but whats the point for one little game... I will it I have to but I'd like to try to get it to work in XP.

Thanks for the links. I downloaded the windows ports but only got the one from rancidmeat working. It was pretty cool, except for a few bugs and audio probs I had. Im trying to get the 1st windows port going but I dont know how and the readme didnt really help, lol.
I think I may just end up playing it on a Pentium 133 I just pieced together, lol. Well that or play on N64 for 4 player dathmatch.. lol.

Get DOSBox. It emulates a DOS environment so that the old games can work. You can change the clock cycle in DOSbox to emulate either a faster or slower system. The default cycle of 4000 seems to on par with 486sx.

@secretweapon- I was looking for a good emulator thanks.
Out of the 2 ports cack01 showed I got the one from racidmeat to work. It actually runs it perfectly in my mind and theres not very many bugs. All you do it copy the DUKE3D.GRP file into the bin folder and there you go. :)

Wow...Duke3d was/is so badass. I found it again on Ebay, boxed and everything original. Got it working on a pure dos box now with a whole bunch of other old games.
