View Full Version : ATI Shuts Down [H]ardOCP Forum!
NuclearGOD
04-28-04, 03:20 PM
According to recent rumors circulating around the net, Ati has "strongly recommended" that Hardocp close their forum until the release of the r420 (x800) graphics card.
This was prompted by Hardocp's breach of the Non-Disclosure Agreement with Nvidia, releasing benchmarks of their NV40 card earlier. Ati is worried that the same thing might occur with the r420, so they have taken actions to minimize the chance that this could happen to them. Information indicates that if Hardocp breaks the NDA with Ati like they did with Nvidia, Ati will sue, and not send anymore graphics cards to them for reviewing purposes.
Again, this is just speculation, and none of it is confirmed, but Hardocp's forums have been down for an extended period of time--check it out yourself!

Hard to say without the inside scoop. I find it hard to believe ATi would force the closure of a forum because of what might happen.

This question goes out to both...OC550 and NuclearGOD...
Do you have proof this is why the forums are down...has it been posted anywhere...or is this strickly rumor ville?
BTW - I did email Kyle and Steve about this "rumor"...just to see what they both say on the matter...IF they even reply...
hahah sad *******s. like it matters
Thats ****ty, I was waiting to sell my ATI 9500np and all the contact info was in the hardocp forum. Oops, should have written it down I guess. :(

Odd... dunno about the rumors, but according to netcraft Hardforums.com went down/changed over last Sunday the 25th. According to autoprobe, no known changes to their Apache server, but could easily have changed their firewall, load balance, etc.
Does anyone remember if Hardocp forums being up on the 25-27th? If so, more than likely, they really are doing some type of maintenance. Better to wait for an official reply on Hardocp instead of speculating.

Why do you insist on telling people DOWNGRADE their video cards...
Thats like me telling people to go get a 87 Geo Metro because it will keep up with the newer corvettes...
One minute you say go get a Ti4200...then you turn around and tell someone else to get a 9800 Pro...when they both have DX9 cards now

glock you may as well give it up. oc550 never admins his mistakes and likes trying to convince people to downgrade their cards because he is in love with his ti4200. so sad he doesn't know how crappy his card really is

You still didnt get it...and prove to me that the Ti4200 is faster then a 9500NP in DX 9 apps...
If you can prove to me that the Ti4200 is faster then a 9500NP in DX 9 apps...I will be the first to call BS since the Ti4200 does NOT support DX 9...
The Ti4200 MIGHT be faster then a 9500NP on DX 8...but who honestly cares about DX 8 now...like 20K is so hard to break anymore...
BUT you still missed the main thing I was asking and still will keep asking until you give a answer...because I know I am not the only one asking this...but the only one asking this on the forum right now...

EXACTLY what I wanted to say!
This thread is in no way related to 9500s, 9600s, or TI4200s. Please leave that to the rest of the forum (if in an intelligent discussion) or PMs (if you absolutely MUST flame).
After the many posts OC550 and glock19owner have "participated" in together, I'd think you two would have some understanding of each other . Please, keep the debates OUT of unrelated threads.
JigPu
Back on topic. So Kyle or Steve leaked the benches on purpose?
If they didn't, I see no reason why ATI would force the forums to close. It just doesn't make sense. It would be simillar to bazooka Joe forcing a candy store to close a single room b/c some kid stole some candy. The single room had nothing to do with the candy being stolen, the whole store needs to be closed down to prevent candy from being stolen.
On a side note, I would think the OC folding team should be taking advantage of this.

glock, lets take this to IMs, I want to have a debate in private as not to get this thread locked
How 'bout you both back off eachother for a little why. Agree to disagree, as it were.
Wether or not ATI shut down their forums or not, we'll pro'lly see an influx of new users here soon ;)
I highly doubt that is the case. Were it something like that, Kyle or Steve probably would have made a post on the main page about it, as they have always been open about being "threatened" by someone. Most likely its just maintainence gone awry, which is no uncommon at all.

GUYS THEY ARE UPGRADING TO VB 3.0!! lol......
EDIT: Ok, now that I am not so shocked about rumors, I do know they are upgrading becuase I see VB3.0 right in front of my eyes, and it could take 2 days to upgrade if you are installing hacks. I was hacking G.O. Forums for a couple months.
I am not defending [H], but let's try to keep rumors down to a minimum unless we know for sure. This does sound quite ridiculouse, I doubt that ATi would shut down their forum becuase they leaked nvidia info? Whoever leaked nvidia info probably was working on the inside, how else would secret info get out? Now would this nvidiot be working for ATi and leaking info too? What would stop them from coming to another big forum like OC?
Get my point? If it isn't, it REALLY looks like a rumor and nothing more.
BTW, sorry for the "nvidiot" in my post, I just think that is too funny. Some member posted that. Im not really that much of a fanboy, it is hillariouse some of these things though hehehe
It should not take 2 days to upgrade. and 2 days is just what I have noticed:eek:

I think that is pretty unfair to say really.
I've received some excellent help there when I couldn't receive help anywhere else. There are good members there just like there are anywhere else... Unfortunately there isn't anything done about the bad seeds there and there is no one to lead by setting good examples. The good are too easily drowned out by the bad.
I've knocked the [H] myself in the past, but after receiving some really insightful help on a PCI controller problem there I realized I should reconsider.
It isn't a place I would want to hang out though, as the environment is just hostile. They do have very good help to offer if you get the right people to help you.

glock just admit that the 4200 isnt a bad card, and oc550 just admit that as ****ty as the old radeons are ati had a jump on nvidia with dx9 and was better with it.

Im sorry OC550 but again most synthetic benchmarks mean crap. I have a radeon 9200 in my rig and my brother has a ti4200 in his rig. My 9200 is made by connect3d and his ti4200 is made by bloodymonster. He has about 512 more megs of ram then I do. He also has a maxtor 7200 rpm 8 meg cache pata drive in his computer while I have a 5400 rpm 2 meg cache pata drive in my computer. Other then that our systems are exactly identical down to the bios on the motherboard and stepping on the chip. In fact the only other thing differing is our case and that's it. But yet for some reason I still get higher benchmark scores and very smooth playbility in games with the eye candy and on medal of honor: allied assault in an intense fight his computer looks like a slide show. Sorry man, but just face the facts, In real world comparisons gettign away from that synthetic benchmark bull**** even the radeon 9200 kills the ti4200.
Aeon Flux, did you happen to miss macklin01's post?
I would suggest you edit your post before another mod sees it, which is likely to happen in a thread that degrades like this.
Why can't we all just get along and read warnings when they are given. Macklin posted and made it very clear to take that argument elsewhere. Please do it. I recomend this thread be sent to the trash heap:eek:

Come on guys! Drop it please. I hate to be off topic of the thread myself...but lets just end it and have on topic posts after this one. I mean come on, it is not that hard to stay on topic and just end it. Really, it is not. Funny, the two that were origionally arguing were able to stop it in this thread and take it to IM's but everyone else is having some trouble.
Anyways, just to add some relevent info to the thread, [H]ardforums are still down, and I doubt they messed up becuase I am not seeing any SQL errors or anything, also the theme is still the stock VB theme, so my only conclusion is they either messed something up, ATi really did shut em down ( I doubt it becuase it really seems quite far fetched ), or they are taking their time and installing some hacks.
This thread will not be needed to be sent to the trash heap if we all could just play nice and get along :(

Anyways, now that it is day 3 I am starting to get a little suspiciouse something is up and they are on day 3 and still have the stock VB theme. That tells me that they are either installing hacks that are not theme related, or something out of the ordinary is up. Alot of hacks require the editing of a template, so they obviously are not hacking with those types of hacks becuase they have not gotten their template yet, unless they plan to use the stock VB, which I doubt.

I would think this is getting to the point of being a considerable amount of downtime in reference to their advertisers even.
Will we have downtime for our VB3 move or will it be mostly transparent?
If it will be anything like this, I don't want to move at all.

Isn't part of the problem with upgrading some of the custom written mods that the forums have that take some rewriting? I remember some people saying that about these forums, that some stuff isn't 100% transferrable. Is that possible in the case of [H]?
I also got the main page errors but they didn't last for long to me.
Yeah, that could take a little while to do. That's mainly why there aren't any huge mods going on to this forum. We know it's gonna be a pain to transfer them to VB3, so we aren't adding any until the officaial version comes out.
...hopefully it doesen't take this long to install VB3 for us (if that is indeed the problem they're having)...
JigPu
Are you guys kidding me:confused: There is no need for the kind of down time they are going thru. Just watch how much time we are down when we switch over. Then you come back to this thread and start asking why are they down for three days and counting.

I had no idea what it really entails; I have no idea what the underlieing characteristics look like or how the components interact. Will be very interesting to see what our downtime is like when the change comes.
V_R, I believe there are custom things done here, and I know there are many hacks implemented already also.
Jigpu, not sure on your meaning with how you worded that, but just wanted to mention that a VB3 final release is out... Anyhoo, it's just a matter of time for us now and the word on it is "soon".

I can't believe ati would have them close it down. The images where leaked due to them having lacking security features on the site, and this was fixed as soon as they started to be spread across the net. (it was a finnish guy who grabed the images)
If you want to find a conspiracy theory then look at somebody else who could have a problem with them, like that firm who wanted to sue them for that gaming console ect. (I don't think that would be the reason either)

Not being able to do a traceroute or ping is meaningless since the majority of hosts now disallow ICMP unless listed in their allowed routing table. As for it being down, the physical DNS resolves just fine, the pages themselves might be down but it looks like they tried to change their Apache web server as well as PHP 2 days ago and again today.
on the 26th: Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) PHP/4.1.1 mod_gzip/1.3.19.1a
on the 28th: Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) mod_gzip/1.3.26.1a PHP/4.3.1
Still hosted at PLANET.COM but IP changed to 69.56.175.234
Of course, that could just be load balance or virtual machine/round-robin/domain sub for IP address.
It is pretty easy to check any web site using http://www.netcraft.com. It doesn't give a complete breakdown, but it will at least resolve names and simple HTTP GET commands. So as of right now, http://www.hardocp.com is UP in terms of having a web server respond on standard port 80 - just not the complete web pages that everyone expects :D
Unfortunately, there are many ways to mess up... I've seen too many of them. However, it is unusual since they could have simply rolled back to a backup machine/state.

To quote Mia from Pulp Fiction concerning rumors about her and Tony Rokahara .
"But when you scamps get together, you're worse than a sewing circle."
First off, we are moving to VBulletin3 on our forums. The database import alone took over 56 hours to complete on a dual 2800+ box with 4GB of ram and three striped RAID arrays (OS, Index, Data). Then we went to re-index the search database yesterday via the web interface with VB3. For some reason, we are still 100% unsure of, this caused the outages you saw on HardOCP. It looks as though one of our switches was flooded with data.
So the outage was nothing more than a VB install learning curve problem.

I think it was plain that most people here assumed that you had trouble with the move in some way. We can't control how threads get started, but we were for the most part saying that it was a VB3 move problem and no conspiracy theory.
Thanks for the update anyways, its always nice to have suspicions confirmed. I hope your sewing circle gets back up soon, I'm sure all of your scamps miss it quite a bit. :)

Actually if you count from the moment we started till now, we are on day 7.
If you read above, you will see that the importation of the database took over 50 hours. There was also a lot of other house keeping we wanted to do before that process was started. Once the import was completed, we started the re-index procedure within 24 hours. (Sorry we were not right on top of it the moment it finished, but quite frankly, the forum is not top priority and there are more than a few other things going on now that require our attention.) The re-index procedure ran for over 10 hours before we saw the problems with HardOCP.com and it was not evident to us that VB3 was the issue. Our forums are on a dedicated database server so we did not think there would be significant impact to HardOCP.com.
Are there any other questions I can answer for you?

I had surrendered to that belief also as it seems like we started talking about vB3 over a year ago, until I saw someone post with linkage in forum feedback a week or so back.

house keeping = (deleting certain posts/threads + rewording certain statements)^((reposting certain pictures)/(rebreaking the search function))
This could take a lot of time, its hard to estimate just how much material, erm, I mean time, house keeping can consume.

If information of any new ati card leaked out many people on the net would of had it by now and could posted it on their own sites - since they did not sign any NDA agreement, this is very possible.

I hope we don't have any problems... Our upgrade is estimated to take around 6 hours, barring any similar complications. It is likely to come in the next week or two I believe, so people might want to keep a forum contact in mind incase there are questions if the site is down longer. I can be contacted on AIM if anyone wants to add me to their buddy list.
Who exactly will be doing the dirty work for us, do you know Paul? I know/think Inet will atleast pay for vB3 license, but who actually implements the changes? N_D appears as the most active admin, so I would guess he may be the go-to guy on the forum side, but do we do it or does it happen on the Inet side? Will Skip be around to help out?
I realize these may all be questions that are unanswered yet, but I'm just curious.

LOL was this an interested read or what!
I am sure glad that it got "cleared up" by [H] though. I can see them taking a while to clean all that crap since majority of the threads over there are. But over a week? I do hope it is they are rewriting some of the guidelines and statements though. With all those members that could be a really powerful place for help and info but without moderation it is almost useless imo.
On a side note I really hope we don't upgrade to the new version. It seems all jumpled up and confused on the forums I've seen it on so far.
Shouldn't this thread be in general discussion though?

Well, I've been gone for awhile--on vactation:cool:
Anyways, I can't believe people are still doubting that this is the case. It seems to me that [H]ardOCP is like the class bully--they appear to be all mean and tough, but are really just pushovers. Numerous posts say that they would tell their followers the truth, but I don't think that they would do that. They seem to only pick on other people, like Infinium(sp?)--even though that was obviously a scam.
I e-mailed and called an ATI office yesterday. No reply on email, but on the phone, i learned that ATI could put an injunction on review media (newspapers, websites, etc.) if they violated their agreements with the company. Of course, she couldnt talk about unreleased products or specific reviewers. Interesting.
I can't wait until ATI's NDA is up so we can finally see how good the r420 is going to be, but what is going to be even better is watching the reopening of [H]ardocp's forum, since they have "finished upgrading". What a conincidence!

What are you talking about? What exactly makes [H] forums different from any other VB install except maybe size of DB? Nothing was more likely to go wrong with there upgrade than almost any other. Oh man! This thread takes the cake. I guess I'll add to the speculation. It's Tues am and I can't get to www.hardocp.com, couldn't get it to open last night before work either. I did a dns in mirc and got this:
/dns www.hardocp.com
*** Looking up www.hardocp.com
*** Resolved www.hardocp.com to 69.56.175.234
So, when I put http://69.56.175.234 in my browser, something really strange comes up:
New Home in Frisco, Texas

I clicked on the links, and checked out the pics 8)

I think it's virtual bulletin, but I may be wrong on the virtual part. I always call it vBulletin, never really thought what the "v" stood for and just assumed "virtual". ;)

vBulletin stands for vBulletion... According to Jelsoft staff, "the v has no meaning", but others usually suspect it means virtual or visual.
Others suspect that since vB was originally developed for a Visual Basic website, it was a play on words so to speak, using the same initials and probably means visual bulletin. I personally think the Jelsoft answer means that it was copying from Visual basic's "VB" - if the "v" had no meaning at all, then why put it there? Maybe they didn't mean anything by it, but I think the "v" got there to copy from VB... It has been said by John Percival (trasnlated UBB (Ultimate Bulletin Board) software into PHP and sold it as vB) that the vB and VB is not coincidence - so there is a relation there.
Go here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73275) to read semi-current staff comment and read the last post especially. I think there is probably motive for the developers to disclaim any association with VB perhaps for copyright/trademark reasons or something along those lines.
Regardless of the true meaning of the word, vBulletin is the software the forums run on - its a "visual source" application, so when you buy a license you can look at and modify the source code. It comes with an Admin Control Panel, a Moderator Control Panel, a User Control Panel, as well as a backend database coded in MySQL, among other things I haven't included.
Our particular version, has been heavily modified by Skip. A lot of it is stuff he custom coded - the stars are one example, because the star hack didn't work right for us. The thread hover preview is either a hack or custom coded, as well as the quick reply box amongst many other not as obvious to the uninformed changes. I'm fairly certain Skip wasn't the only one to do work on the code however, I suspect that Newbie_Doo has also changed some things around in there.
I hope the code has been commented sufficiently though... It sure would be a pain trying to confirm which hacks need to be reimplemented without having the code properly commented.
Well still down:eek:
