I have an ATI radeon 9800Pro 128mb card, and I have been playing around with ATITools. I have a question for everyone that has a similar setup. What would you consider a conservative setting for the Core speed and the memory speed on this card?? I have not upgraded the cooling to this card and I would like some conservative numbers that will not jeopardize the card and definitely not give any artifacts. I know every setup is different but I am asking what numbers you would consider based on your experience.

All of the 9800 Pro video cards I have seen/used will overclock to 9800XT speeds (412/730) easily with stock cooling. Only way you will find out, is to try it.:)
Oh and wow its been a LOOOONG time since I have posted here.:)
Hmmm, really? I'm testing a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) with Hynix RAM, and I can't get past 402 for the core without getting tons of artifacts on certain benchmarks (not all). Is this card bad? Got the RAM up to 740 no problem.

You might want to reseat the heatsink...if using the factory heatsink...also...check the thermal paste...mine hardly had any thermal paste at all...I replaced it with AS5...
I replaced mine too, but I JUST replaced it like 30 minutes ago, so maybe it needs more time to be heated/cooled/heated/cooled to set itself?

it will take a few days for the AS5 to settle...if that is what you used...if so..try the OC in a few days...and as cheap as the VGA's are...might want to possible concider going that way also...

With overclocking, it's purely luck of the draw. Perhaps I was lucky with all the 9800 Pros I've used.
And I agree, adding some AS3 or better to the GPU will help with temps and further overclocking with the stock cooler. Maybe I should have said that in my original post.:)

Sorry, I didn't quite catch what you meant by this.

VGA Silencer (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/products/vga_silencer/)
Ah, well, I'm going to WC mine, but I was just testing this R350 stock to see what it could do. Apparently it can't do as much as many of the other R350s out there with stock cooling. :(

I am not looking to get every ounce of performance out of this card. All I want is some reliable setting I can set this thing at and never worry about them again??

I have an ATI 9800pro, I'm getting 480/750. All Stock.
My God...how?!?!?!?!
Since ut2k4 and far cry came out I decided it was time to overclock my BBA 9800Pro, and so I set out to do so. On all stock cooling I've gotten to 420/370 easily, the card is just o/cing like a champ. I've ordered a vga silencer and some tweakmonster ramsinks to help aid in my journey, as I'm not that confident overclocking on ati's tiny stock h/s.

Mine is at only 425/364 (damn you samsung ram)

I have a VGA silencer on my 9800 pro 128. I CAN hit in the 440/375 range, but I keep it running everyday at 425/370. It's very stable that way and plenty fast. I think 415/365 is a good conservative number to shoot for. That's about stock XT speeds.
I also did the XT flash thing - kinda cool, but I really don't see a real benefit to doing it.
About the low overclock; do you hit 402 while having your ram set to 370? I can get high extremes on one while the other is set lower, but to get them both high is harder.

480/380 stock out of mine also...the modded VGA cooler helps to run at 500Mhz for 3 or 4 01/03 runs...but the main thing is...it keeps it about 40c cooler at 480/380 over the stock setup...
And yes that is not a type o...40c cooler...full load on stock cooling it was reaching 85c...at 480/380...

My goodness, I'm amazed... How are you getting these numbers stock??? I can't go past 410/370 without my card throwing a hissy fit!
Well put simply, overclocking is a crapshoot, some chips are great and some chips aren't so great. All you can do is try your hardest to get the best o/c you can with your gear.

I got a 9800 Pro from a Dell about a month ago. I removed the heatsink immediatly and replaced the goo with Ceramique. ATItool maxed out the core OC at only 390 MHz. Is that pathetic or what? So next, I lapped and tapped a stock all-copper Athlon XP hs and mounted a 25CFM 60mm fan on top. Then applied some AS3 and bolted the heatsink down to the card. Net gain... now ATItool hits a whopping 399MHz.
I've got a 9800np that's almost a year old that smokes this card. Even the memory OC blows on this 9800 Pro, (360MHz).
I agree with what shtweazel suggested.

I have mine watercooled with tweak monsters on and a vcore mod (1.9v) and the most I can hit stable (at 3dmark03) is 450/375:mad:
Maybe this (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=291104&perpage=30&pagenumber=1) will be somewhat usefull.

Real easy for mine when I was running stock cooling...
before it was even installed I had taken off the heatsink and noticed that the GPU barely had any thermal paste at all....removed what little junk stuff their was...replaced it with AS5 and lapped the stock heatsink a little...
This is what cooling I am running now...
2x60mm (1 thermaltake (32cfm) - left 1 YS Tech (40cfm) - right...the YS Tech overlaps to help cool the neck on the VGA...if you can still call it a VGA...

Maybe after WC'ing my 9800 Pro, if I'm getting crappy performance I'll just exchange it for a new one. Since OC'ing is a crap shot, might as well ante up and throw the dice again right? :D
