hi, i have an old compaq 5447 with a 450mhz k6-2 proccesor, i added a voodoo3 2000 and am currently runnning windows 2000. The BIOS on this motherboard is an award, although it ried looking on compaqs website and e-mailed a rep i coul not find any bios updates........so i would like to no how to overclock using this bios or if there actually is a bios that i can downlload for this system

That cpu is horrible to overclock, I wouldn't bother. The heat you will build if you can get it stable will be intolerable. sorry

Wow. that is great advice, thanks CSaddict. How bout next time you answer his question. First of all do you have multiplier or front side bus adjustments on your motherboard? if you do I think that I have heard that since the lowest K6-2 processor was 300 Mhz and therefore had a 3 multplier if you set the multiplier to 2 then it thinks its 600 Mhz. Or of course if it goes past 6 multiplier than you just set it to whatever you want. First of all pick up a good hsf though, anything that fits socket A motherboards also fits socket 7 as long as you dont have capicators or something else very close to the socket in your way.

Here's a link to a compaq support page containing the motherboard jumpers and dipswitches. For the front side bus settings, go to "CPU Jumper Setting Table - Switch 1", and for multiplier and voltage settings, go to "CPU Jumper Setting Table - Switch 2". Here's the link :

Good luck with your OC ! I too have a compaq and that's where I found how to OC it ! ( I didn't finish, but it's just the stability issue !)

They're gaining back popularity !!!!!!!...... lol:p
The best I ever got to run stable with my k6-2-450 was 550. Used jumpers for the multiplier and upped the voltage. I managed 600 mhz, but never got stable.
I also couldn't get SoftFSB or anything else to run on that
mainboard.
All I did for cooling was a fan in bottom front and a fan blowing out through the top of the case. Temp was a little high at idle, but ran steady and was never an issue.
Good luck.

Buy a good HSF (I bought FOP38 but even FOP32 make the work) and a good paste (Artic Silver) then start pushing the multiplyer at x5. If it works then at 5.5x. If you see windows freeze or crashing the raise voltage (I think that you are at 2.4 but check it) .1V at time but not grow over 2.7V. Raise FSB too at 112 and check it with x5. I think with a good HSF you can catch 600-616 Mhz with none problem.
