IE not working but other online programs are???

Ok, I was trying to help my fix my friend's computer, but I am stumped. Internet explorer will not connect to any websites, it just times out and gives me a page cannot be found error. But every other internet based program on her computer works. I can search and download stuff from winmx, update avg and adaware, but no ie. I tried uninstalling her dsl software and reinstalling it, but that obviously didn't help. Any suggestions of where to start troubleshooting?

try setting the IE settings back to defaults

Check to see if the firewall is blocking IE. Also check if they configured IE incorrectly (go into Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab, and take a look.

It could also be that the DNS settings are wrong, to verify that you can use the command prompt to try to ping a site by name (ie. ping www.overclockers.com), if you get results then the name was resolved and it's not DNS related. If it says it's unabled to resolve the name then try pinging by IP (for overclockers.com ping 63.74.115.230). If you get results when pinging by IP then it's probably DNS related, setting the adapter to obtain the DNS automaticly will work in most cases (control panel->network connections->local area connection 1, right click->properties, clcik on TCP/IP properties, click properties).
